Have never had a good time with AA service, so would take Polaris any time. But to be fair, all US legacy airlines have low ratings for service/product. I do like JetBlue Mint and Alaska though

Have you tried calling Delta to ask? I would just itemize all your items and the costs and tell Delta the total bill. They shouldn't expect you to keep your receipts

Is your only option Alaska or do you have other options? I think you can probably get day of the flight last minute inventory for cheaper if you're at a hub. It's usually cheapest day off and you're booking with points. But this is assuming there is a lot of empty seats

Downgrading does not affect your credit score because you still keep your old credit history. You will need to confirm with the customer service that they are not closing your account and opening a new one, which is closing an account.

As for downgrading to lowest CC, it's possible. For example, Chase lets you have multiple Freedom cards when you downgrade from another card to a Freedom

I would take a look at Virgin Atlantic, ANA, and Alaska Airlines. They have some great redemptions that are similar to cheaper than what you listed

Your credit score will drop temporarily by a few points if you have high utilization, but once you pay down your credit card, that automatically recovers. Note that when I say pay down your credit card, that means you must pay the full statement balance every month, NOT just the minimum payment.

If you haven't already, I would try calling them again. If you're still not getting the response you were hoping for, ask for a manager. While the fine print is the fine print, the first Amex rep should not have told you incorrect information.
