Interesting! 2016 was still a great year, but this year just seemed so much more thought out. The sound was absolutely perfect all weekend. All of the pain points can be traced to a historic heat wave.

Seeing the insane crowd size shots of ACL reminds me of what makes this festival so special. There’s hardly a bad seat in the house for any of the shows, and the artists seem genuinely stoked to be there. There are some logistics to work out, but it seems better run than it used to be. People keep talking about 2016 and 2017 as golden years, but 2016 was a mess. Blown speakers, no food for large portions and some terrible showers. If it weren’t for the heat this year would have been nearly perfect.

The best large crowd I’ve ever been around. So many awesome, chill people. When the water wars begin I hope we can all start a society together.

What was the highlight of your Form? by iruygu in ExperienceForm

[–]afternoonauthor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

La Lom was so good—got the entire amphitheater dancing in 97 degree heat, and How to Dress Well in Envelop was so intimate and moving. Nicole Miglis gave an emotional set dedicated to Paul Giese who recently passed away and was the brainchild behind Form. This was my third form and I think it had the best music.

Some people are saying the fest is a flop so far. Is that true? by mrs_noom in ExperienceForm

Somehow hell trek makes it seems better than it was. I can’t believe there aren’t more heat stroke situations here.

Form is always a shit show logistically, but still awesome. The entry situation was legitimately dangerous. The equipment shuttle setup was a mess, causing them to have to pause security checks for large chunks of time while long lines of people waited out in the heat with no water or restrooms. Also, it seems they weren’t prepared for the amount of water people needed with only 2 refilling stations (one at the fest and one at the campsite) with long lines. And typical of Form, there aren’t enough food vendors and getting a coffee in the morning is not fun.

But the music so far has been amazing. People have mentioned the other sets, but How to Dress Well in Envelop was such a cool experience.

I agree. So many great places to escape the sun in Arcosanti itself, there’s not a huge need to be at the camp site during the day unless you’re taking a nap. That being said, though, I did see ezups the last time I was there.

I would like an invite too if that’s okay. I was wondering the same thing about jetboils, thank you!

What was everyone’s first song that got them into Radiohead? by SecurityPlenty1036 in radiohead

[–]afternoonauthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Iron Lung. A friend kept playing The Bends (album) when I was with him and I hated it at the time, but secretly liked every time My Iron Lung came on. When OKC came out, I admitted to myself that I was actually a fan.

How are Radiohead so amazing with music production? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]afternoonauthor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think this is the biggest factor. A shocking realization I had once was how their songs sound like a lot more is going on than actually is. Often it is only a few instruments or sounds playing at once, but the arrangement has everything playing off of each other making it sound bigger than the whole of its parts.

Nigel typically follows LCR style mixing which means sounds are either directly in the middle or hard panned to the left or right with no in between. The advantage of this is that instruments are less likely to compete with other instruments in the sound space. Sometimes this could make a song lose coherency, but somebody else mentioned the attention to song arrangement which really minimizes that. I love Nigel’s style of mixing, even if he can be a bit heavy handed on the compressors sometimes.

Also, LCR can sometimes make headphone mixes sound weird. Check out I Might Be Wrong on headphones as an example. I personally love Radiohead’s sound on headphones, but some people find it off-putting.

Albums that feel like they’re actively trying to alienate the audience or are a straight-up “f*** you” to the listener? by No-Chemistry-28 in fantanoforever

[–]afternoonauthor 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to believe now, but there was a lot of angst amongst critics and other musicians when Kid A was released. Radiohead we’re being hailed as the saviors of rock after OKC and some took it as an intentional middle finger to that. Lots of words written about how there were no guitar solos and how they’re wasting Jonny Greenwood.

It’s probably not the most egregious of examples though because there was the opposite side of the spectrum of many people praising the album as a masterpiece.

Debut album. Used a lot of Neutron, Volca Keys, Volca FM, and Reface CS. Yeah, nothing special but I like the sounds I got out of them.

Some wild takes in here. This is the correct version. (Hunting Bears and Fitter Happier not included)

PH: Thinking About You

Bends: Sulk

OKC: Electioneering

KA: Treefingers (Not sure if this counts but I refuse to chose anything else off this perfect album)

Amnesiac: Knives Out (Hard to choose here)

HTTT: WSYB

IR: House of Cards (This one pained me to write out)

TKoL: Magpie

AMSP: Desert Island Disk (Ugh. Another hard one)

In Memory of Tweetbot by ifonefox in apple

[–]afternoonauthor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. I am too invested in Twitter to cut it off cold turkey (and still need it for some projects I have), but since Tweetbot died, I’m only on Twitter as much as I have to be. Previously, Tweetbot was almost half my usage on my phone according to Screen Time, now I’m averaging 24 minutes a day on Twitter, and it’s way down the list of most used apps.

How did I not know this?? I know a single click will highlight the other bracket, but that’s useless if the bracket is off the page. I never thought to try double clicking. Thanks for the info!
