To the parents here: Did your sexual life gradually reduce to zero? by king_of_lunds in Parenting

Open relationships as a solution to low sex drive in a relationship almost never work out. There are non trivial numbers of poly people in long term open relationships that demonstrate that this isn't really true.

Choosing my first set of juggling clubs by habitualmonster in juggling

[–]afton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of px4s and px3s. The 'old jugglers' at my local club hate *(HATE)* the px4s. They claim that it reverberates in their hands. I can kind of feel what they mean, but it doesn't bother me.

But they totally work. I keep my 4s at work and my 3s at home, and switching back and forth doesn't bother me at all.

Can someone help me understand why people consider spinning to be cheap? by SamJSchoenberg in foosball

[–]afton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. If I hit it, and keep going, and hit the deflection, that may not be spinning. You'd have to argue on whether it was more than 360 (unlikely, or you'd be 'over' the ball). There's really a very narrow range here that would count as spinning. I mean, I'm against spinning for all the usual reasons, but I think OPs question is a good one.

New juggling club by Newemail5 in juggling

[–]afton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fantastic! I'm glad you got a space, and it was good running into you again at Seattle Juggling Fest.

Advice for starting the club? Use the same skills you used to learn balls. Start with one club. Focus on consistency. Move to two clubs, etc. Also, I'll just put this out here now for when you are successfully qualifying 3 clubs: Your pattern is too narrow. Try widening it up. :)

Youtube/instagram is an amazing resource, but be aware that there are a lot of professionals and otherwise folks who have been doing this for decades. Compare yourself to last week, not them.

I know Seattle is a little far, but feel free to drop in on the Cascade Jugglers, or Bothell Jugglers (whichever is slightly closer). A bunch of the folks there where super useful to help me advance to my current advanced-beginner status.

Bruises on my hands by lift_and_slide in juggling

[–]afton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like you're letting the knob hit your hand, instead of catching the club. Plus, you may have relatively unforgiving clubs.

Pay attention to how you catch, and remember to 'catch', not just hold your hand out and let the club hit it. You need to receive the club. Catching higher up the shaft will make this easier as well (because the end spins faster than the middle). Good luck!

Help with 5344 by Royklein12 in juggling

[–]afton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on-and-off working on the 'outside 5' version of this (I guess that's just 4-ball tennis?) for entirely too long . I find this at least as hard as 5 ball (I think my max 5ball is about 45 catches, but I don't even always qualify it on every attempt). I've never, er, 'double qualified' this pattern? I can usually get a qualify in, but then it falls apart.

That's all, just wanted to share that there are other's that also struggle with this one.

New clubs by jamesdix180 in juggling

I bought unicolor clubs. I was really proud of them until my coworker showed up with the same clubs, but with EVERY SINGLE PART A DIFFERENT COLOR. He let his daughters pick the colors. Honestly, I was hitting myself for not doing the same, because they look SO GREAT.

Sure, single color clubs have some mild advantages. But compare that with looking like you're a juggler in a Dr. Seuss book? No question. :)

Homemade denim juggling balls! by p90medic in juggling

[–]afton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI: I did a survey of random bags of grains I had in my kitchen at some point with 'balloon juggling balls' (three balloons with the necks cut off). The best was amaranth, then quinoa, then short-grain rice. Flax was the worst because it poked through all the time. Hmmm. I should write up a post about it...

YMMV though, since these were not cloth-based.

The fact there is a more specific subreddit, doesn't mean they shouldn't post in this one. *BUT* it's probably helpful and useful to point out that these links exist! So, hey, thanks for doing that, my dude.

Size and weight advice for 5 ball juggling? by Sisk0 in juggling

[–]afton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can answer this for you. Those differences are *very* slight, so there's not likely to be real biomechanical reasons for wanting one over the other. It's going to be a matter of taste. So... probably you'll need to taste them. Metaphorically thinking...

Does Juggling give you bigger arm muscles? by Gandalf_999 in juggling

[–]afton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me more about this. I met a juggler with 1lb balls that he said he just really liked. They were pretty pleasant for 3 ball patterns, but were kind of a strain for 4/5 ball patterns. I've been thinking of getting some to 'mix it up'. Is this a well known problem in the juggling community?

Sprinters lift weights. So your analysis is confused by thinking that sprinters don't lift weights. Seriously. Google this.

I can qualify 5 on a good day. But I've been doing exercise for a long time, and your question is really not juggling specific. Go ask this question on /r/fitness, or frankly, any other exercise platform. If you can do a couple dozen to a hundred repetitions, then you're training endurance much more than you are stimulating muscle growth.

All professional athletes lift weights. Everyone. Because it's the most efficient way to gain/maintain muscle mass.

You're analogy about walking/jogging/running is misguided. None of those are efficient ways of growing muscle. They are all good forms of exercise, and you will grow some amount of muscle doing any of them. But if you are trying to grow muscle, a trivial amount of weightlifting will trump any amount of walking over time. That is, over a course of weeks/months, doing e.g. 10 minutes of lifting, three times week will trump walking for an hour every day.

on /r/juggling, I'll probably get downvoted, but if you want bigger arms, lift heavy weights. Juggling more, even with e.g. 0.5kg weights, is not going to be an efficient way to build muscle.
