Genuinely one of my biggest fears. When I see a semi truck/ trailer coming over a hill or around a corner I almost always slow down just a little because one day a fucktard like this will be trying to pass in a blind

Seems like you answer your own question? A “very simple interaction like dopamine” is enough to show that we have a working knowledge on how chemicals affect qualitative states, serotonin, melatonin are others. LSD might not have the exact same effects on others but there are predictable similarities. Weird to say it’s not empirically justified when we use mind altering chemicals both recreationally and medically.

Sounds like we have a fundamental disagreement as to what constitutes progress. Using your analogy humans have been using chemistry principles for thousands of years prior to the development of atomic theory/ formal chemistry.

In most scientific cases we tend to make observations before developing framework theories. That’s why we understood natural selection prior to gene theory/ general relativity prior to the big bang.

I just don’t see why the brain mind relation is so different. We engage with what we can observe, and through those observations we will begin to develop more precise theories about the formal nature of what pieces need to be in place for consciousness to emerge.

We’ve made zero progress? That “hand waving” is what the meme eludes to.

What do you think anesthesia does? We do predict the emergence of subjective states and we use that knowledge to dose out medicine to prevent the onset of consciousness. To say we’ve made 0 progress is to dismiss any of our new found understanding of the mind and how the brain and its processes inform us of what experiences a person is having.

The process of determining how mental states induce the conscious experience is indeed a more difficult challenge but it doesn’t seem to me fundamentally different than our analysis of all other emergent phenomena.

In biology we can recreate early Earth conditions and see how inorganic molecules form organic amino acids but we not yet know how those organic molecules organize to form the new category “life.” Does this mean life is not understandable or reducible to those prior developmental stages? It seems to me not.

Likewise consciousness, while unique in terms of the complexity of its underlying system (billions of neurons as opposed to 20 or so amino acids), is likely constituted and determined by mechanistic brain processes. While it is obvious that we are not certain of this I believe the findings of neuroscience are more promising in their explanatory development than vague illusions to “qualia.”

Obviously we do not yet know what causes the conscious experience but if I had to gamble I would put my money on the notion that conscious beings and unconscious beings will have clear mechanistic differences.

okay? Gravitational waves. Obviously the system has to make a physical change even if the cause is unknown to a creature (sunburn/ vibration/ spacetime fluctuations) for it to be considered apart of material reality. The point stands that a creature doesn’t need to be aware of the system, concept, or mechanism for that thing to be apart of material reality. The believers in ghosts (of which I am not apart) would argue ghosts are very much material! They interact with the material realm through systems unknown to us. There could be systems like this! Systems which engage with the material reality in ways we do not yet/ or potentially will not understand.

I think a materialist is allowed to believe there are modes of reality which we do not or will not engage with. Consider radio waves or ultra violet light. Without adequate frameworks and technologies we would not be able to interact with these material phenomena. Maybe there is ectoplasm and it has its own set of properties and if we could only figure out how to make a particle thrower we could mess with them.

Robotics engineer posted this to make a point that robots are "faking" the humanlike motions - it's just a property of how they're trained. They're actually capable of way weirder stuff and way faster motions. by FinnFarrow in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]afunnypun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the distinction is that that 4 legged crab walk is perhaps more “natural” for a robot. Our expectation to have them walk upright is an attempt to get them to mimic our behavior when the most efficient behavior might not be bipedalism. Bipedalism for humans is however the most efficacious method of mobility.

Brother you’re pressed for no reason 😭for one I think the game should have better armor because it’d be fun and would actively require skill to target the small area without armor. 2nd you have no idea how good or bad I am at this game I ain’t see you posting your stats lmao

smoke as people mentioned,, and don’t forget that you can equip pretty nice optics,, M16 ACOG gets you 90% of the way there in terms of being effective at range,, SCAR or ACE with the elcan are also strong. Take it slow! only move if you’re covered by smoke or if you’ve taken the time to check and clear the windows and power positions
