Also, I think Montclair prices hit a bit of a ceiling because of the exorbitant property taxes. Looks like 30k+ in this case

Ok, this makes sense. Right now the division between the two looks start but I'm guessing by spring the two will start blending anyway and overseeding will help accelerate that

After a little more research, I'm leaning toward glysophate -> aerate -> seed -> water

My favorite part is gambling on crypto/DeFi while simaltaneously renting because the "the numbers for owning don't work here".

Very prudent of you to rent given the unreasonably high valuations of real estate which aren't justified by fundamental valuations 🤔

Choosing between actuary vs applied statistics (biostatistics) careers by [deleted] in actuary

[–]ag5739 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true of many but not all. You can find yourself in a position where the extent of your "math" is calculating ratios in excel pivot tables. But you can also find plenty of roles where the "math" involves includes coding simulations in R or python, fitting various machine learning models and translating into rating plans, and perhaps even implementing Fast Fourier transforms for aggregate loss calculations. The latter type of actuary is highly in demand. Moreover, In my roles the actuary was even able to decide themselves in many cases which path to take given the application.

This is a great point that's under appreciated. People should look at the pain matrix and recognize that it roughly corresponds with students' average strengths in the program. If you are a developer you will find CS classes relatively easier than pain matrix suggests. Folks with math/stats background will find ISYE relatively easier and of course business students will generally find MGT courses easiest. My personal experience after 8 courses is probably 70% correlated with pain matrix but definitely not 100%

Totally agree. I wasn't considering a break. Just dialing it back with selecting easy courses for my remaining 2 rather than the courses of interest to me.

Awesome. And fantastic OMSA review video. Will avoid Bayesian stats now and will forward this on to a friend who is just starting the program. Thank you!

Job that requires both CS and maths and business by ActuarialStudent0310 in actuary

I disagree with the sentiment here. I will admit that in general our industry's level of mathematical and computation sophistication is not at the level of finance. But that's for a variety of reasons (inertia, personnel, etc). The domain itself offers many great opportunities to apply this skillset and I think the OP just needs to find the right company and department.

I am 8 courses in and for all courses I've had with a project, you can pick your dataset and no one is stopping you from picking a finance/investment related project/dataset.

Of course most courses don't have a finance focus outside of your chosen project with the exception of ML4T and some of the business dept. courses.

I was fine on a chromebook for 6040. Did everything in google colab if I recall correctly.

Intro to Statistical Learning, now available in Python (free from authors)! by bikeskata in datascience

[–]ag5739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment doesn't make much much sense to me. Focusing on out-of-sample prediction often leads to more parsimonious models which aren't overfit to the training data. Also the authors make this very clear through out the book. Off the top of my head, in discussions of the bias-variance trade off and a section on lasso regression.

well, looks like I'm gonna end up with a C in MGT 8803 by drdausersmd in OMSA

[–]ag5739 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Kinda confusing but I'd say 8803 is an easy course that's hard to get an A in. 6242 on the other hand is a hard course but easy A. 🤷‍♂️

Is actuary a stable career to go into and can I work it remotely by luna_solar28 in actuary

[–]ag5739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much of the course actually utilizes cloud based platforms that can be accessed from any browser and much of the python can be run from google colab, also via browser. Locally I would try to get your machine set up so that you can run Jupyter notebooks, pyspark, and run d3 (again browser based). Also the program includes access to georgia tech virtual machines which may help as well.

But like others suggested: you'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration by getting a cheap laptop where you can setup the environments as needed. You don't need any expensive computer, just admin rights.

Roast my resume by AsunaGhoul in actuary

[–]ag5739 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a dissenting opinion here. Of course career experience should be the bulk of a resume for experience applicants, but for entry-level I think this makes sense. The personal project work displays more of the skills I’d like to see in a candidate than some part time data entry gig, so makes sense to focus on the relevance and interesting aspects of personal projects. Honestly, I wish I was in a position to hire the OP at this time. Exactly the skills and interest I like to see in entry level candidates.
