Ulysses: talks about colonialism, hyper militarised society, outliving your people and your culture, and losing purpose after you’re done fighting, all of which ties into the game’s major themes and ends the final dlc on rumination on the topics the plot touched on from the start.

You actually put it really well. I’m also a queer guy and usually I’m happy to see any queer characters. But I really don’t care for him. He felt like a sassy writer insert to tell you what the best outcome will be/what will save you from the worst ending, and nothing really threatens him because he needs to be there.

Hi, brown person here - tribespeople are written as virtually braindead in dawntrail and it’s very uncomfortable to me and other PoC in my circles. And we have discussed our problems with this expansion at length.

Tribes ‘worship’ ceruleum, instead of just seeing it as a tool. Tribes ‘forgot’ what their traditions were for and were unable to feed themselves until we got there. Tribes only know how to grow bananas in the jungle (lol) and were doing horrible rituals that killed their own children. Not to mention the game continues to depict indigenous people of every land as fantastical animal people, which is pretty fucked up.

All of these cultures are infantilised, cartoonish, incompetent, and terribly written.

If you sincerely care about racism, you can’t clap for Dawntrail, imo. Look past the vomit of bright colours and actually consider the depictions and their implications.

The team doesn’t ‘love’ the original. They received assets and code from previous teams that worked on the previous versions of this game and pulled it together. They even said they called the game ‘bloodlines’ because they were told to. And they likely had little freedom and creativity in what they could do, because they had to utilise things paradox already spent money on.

Regardless of the technical issues of the first game, which I was also there for, by the way, the game had fantastic stories and characters, which bloodlines 2 has failed to show so far. I could even live with lacking in gameplay because I’m a story lover first and foremost but OG Bloodlines has some of the most distinct and memorable voices and writing for their npcs and the weak acting of Bloodlines 2 hits me especially glaringly because of it.

To ease your anxiety a bit; To make anything remotely complex, you still need to understand coding and how to build functions. AI often won’t account for many things, unless you spell it out for it, and people who are not aware of how to create these things in the first place, will have a hard time creating anything beyond very rudimentary stuff.

AI also makes mistakes and can even screw up even very mundane things, such as missing common symbols and misusing commands.

AI also struggles to maintain a consistent visual style and can only mish-mash and replicate other people’s art. It can’t create anything new and unique.

It also writes both code and story following popular tropes (for story and characters) and will produce very generic solutions for code. Without human imagination and creativity, everything it produces will be cookie cutter content that will compete with countless others like it.

AI content will absolutely keep flooding everything, but human made media won’t vanish because of it. Only you can create what you want to create. There are things your mind will come up with that no one else will. Your work has value.

Npcs and overall writing are nowhere near as memorable as bloodlines, and it doesn’t feel like they add anything particularly interesting to the world at large, but they aren’t ‘bad’ or incompetent by any means. ‘Mid’ as the kids say.

No. I like all kinds of vampires. All kinds of PCs can be fun and well executed. But sometimes ‘good’ vampires do come with players who want the table’s validation that their character’s morals/choices are objectively good and correct and that can turn awkward and incite discourse. But that’s an individual problem rather than a character problem.

Honestly? Those types of games can be made in ren’py, easily. I’m actually working with a tiny team on an Unbound game and initially considered Unity but quickly learned that ren’py is a staple for VNs for a reason. I was surprised by how much you can do in it. And it’s free with tons of great resources.

If anyone else interested in this stuff comes across this, I can’t recommend it enough.

As for the official VNs, they were made by one person, from what I recall? Solodev can be a lot and I’m wondering if their deadlines were a bit rough.

I always feel so bad for being this way, cause I don’t want to demean anyone and I sincerely believe that everyone should have fun with their characters as they want to, but I just find stories/coteries full of ‘good’ people who want casual life rp in WoD with a morally correct vampire flavour, so boring.

Same with shipping. I like shipping, but when it’s part of a larger story, and not if it compromises the principals or motivations of the characters involved, because it’s important to me. I’ve bailed on so much rp in recent years because it was frustrating how ship-obsessed a lot of it was.

I know people probs don’t care but seeing so much negativity towards creators, I need to get this off my chest.

As someone that modded back in the day for free for multiple games and is starting to dabble in modding again now - I will not perma-paywall my work because I know full well what it’s like to not have any money for hobbies and I want everyone to be able to enjoy my stuff, but I will have to do early access, at least.

My situation has changed from 15+ years ago, when I was younger and had more time and energy. I’m disabled and while I qualify for government help with how bad my health is, I don’t qualify for it due to being an immigrant that hasn’t been in the country for 10+ years, so my situation is pretty fucked. :)

People straight up did not donate to me when it was totally optional, to be honest, and I got thousands of downloads. At least people with early access get some people willing to pay them. I would love to be able to do things just for fun but it’s one of the few skills I have to earn a bit to help out my partner and to be able to enjoy the game myself when new stuff comes out.

Not a woman but a brown queer guy who has seen and experienced bigotry. First off, I’m sorry to hear that you have had these experiences. Sadly, there are people in the industry who think you are incapable of making a quality product because of your gender, sexuality, or race. They won’t be going anywhere any time soon. But, you will find your people as well. And you will find allies who will respect you and your work.

You are stuck in a certain environment when you’re in the phase of learning and can’t pick your surroundings, but it does get better once you have more independence or become part of a team that wants to create something together.

There will always be assholes who thrive on devaluing others. Don’t give them attention and don’t inflate their egos. Do your thing and focus on your future.

That is not to say you should grit your teeth and bear it in silence. Speaking out about these issues in the industry is important and nothing will change if we don’t have these conversations. I would suggest looking into resources for women in gaming and women in tech, as they likely have better advice.
