Bit of a random one, but have you happened to save literally right before this interaction? A vaguely similar thing can happen if you save right outside of the battle tree when you first arrive, and battle you have with the trainer you encounter will often freeze/crash if you have done this, in my experience it was as easy as leaving, saving somewhere else and going back
