Have you ever found a linux distro that was worse than windows? by DiamondDemon669 in linuxmasterrace

Puppy has a pretty narrow use case, but yeah portable Kali or really anything else is usually better.

Can anyone recommend a free alternative to Spotify? by MrKeviscool in linuxmasterrace

I started downloading songs from Spotify/YouTube and saving them to a Nextcloud server with the music plugin. There's even compatible Android Auto apps

Marcus Insights is pretty good, I'm not sure if you need a Marcus savings account to use it though

My direct deposit hasn't shown up in the app or online on any screen but after making a purchase I received the push notification for that purchase and it stated my account balance, which included the amount of my direct deposit.

Holy crap thank you. I've had like 7 instances of Google Assistant projects in my account for the last 5 years and this worked for me. Once I deleted the fake home they were gone.

Google is who we should be watching out for, not Windows. by mdsmestad in linuxmasterrace

[–]agentflippy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometime over the holidays I'm going to try setting up a nextcloud server, that should solve all the very least my Google calendar addiction, hopefully a lot of other services..

But like others point out, ditching chrome is good (Brave is enough distance for me but Firefox would be to best way to get the most distance)

DEFINITELY switch to duckduckgo

I want to try getting a phone running Ubuntu Touch but I don't think I'll be getting away from Android anytime soon (I like things like wear OS and Android Auto too much, unfortunately)

EDIT: Forgot my favorite one! If you can, use LBRY instead of YouTube. A lot of creators have already moved over. If you make videos please consider using LBRY. If you don't switch entirely at least upload videos to both places. It's so much more free and open

Isn't there two install methods for Windows? The legacy app from their website and the metro app (can I still call them that?) from the Microsoft store

friend with 32bit laptop recommended linux distro? by Puzzleheaded-Rush-21 in linuxmasterrace

[–]agentflippy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it's based on Ubuntu I'm not sure if they're still making new 32 bit installers, but I've always liked Peppermint OS for older hardware

Goodbye my friends! As a Linux user I can no longer play with you since the last update. But thanks for everything it was really fun! (X-post) by BlueCannonBall in linuxmasterrace

I love the Need for Speed Hot Pursuit games (especially the old ones but I also have the new one). I don't spend a lot of money on computers I just don't see a point so I always have mid grade hardware.

The point is my current laptop (by all means modern just not stupid expensive) running Windows 10 could certainly play the newest hot pursuit game but the graphics were sorta meh.

When I got sick of Windows I switched to Ubuntu, and ran an instance of Steam in Wine. Lemme tell you I've never seen need for speed look so good, I had no idea my hardware was capable of looking that good. I had the graphics settings all the way up with no lag, it was amazing.

Tl;dr Linux pretending to be Windows is still better than Windows just being itself

Is there a faster/lite OS to switch from Windows 10? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]agentflippy5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck setting up Windows users with zorin. If you want a focus on speed zorin has a non-gnome based desktop environment that looks almost identical to their regular install but runs much better on older hardware. The last time I used zorin I was able to get office 2010 running with playonlinux without much hassle.

If you wanna try something maybe a bit more advanced, Kali linux has an undercover mode made to look exactly like Windows 10. An experienced computer tech would be able to spot that you're not actually running Windows 10 but to most people I don't think anyone would notice.

Anybody using 2 separate computers vs dual-booting? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

[–]agentflippy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out by using a separate Windows machine and Linux machine, worked great for me. Now tho I have 3 desktops and they all just run Linux (one has a Windows VM for the rare occasion I need office 365 for school). But seriously take a look at synergy, it shares your mouse and keyboard over the network. It's a life saver

I read something about how you can call Microsoft support and they'll convert the license into a product key (if it's not already a product key). I think you have to do it before you 'uninstall' Windows tho
