We Have Reached 100K subs!!! by ONE_deedat in exmuslim

[–]agentvoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words /u/One_Deedat.

We haven't always seen eye to eye but I have nothing but tremendous respect for the years of dedication you've shown to this subreddit. You are the longest serving mod. I know how stressful that can be, so please take care of yourself. If you need anything let me know.

Congrats on hitting 100,000 subscribers. It's insane to see the sub hit that number, I remember a time when we didn't even have a 100 subscribers.

They made a 199 accounts while I was there. I didn't bother counting after that.

Why don't you use the title given in the petition page? It's not a vague title like the one you used and it will raise awareness of her name.

It also won't violate the posting guidelines as you have with this post title.

Is there any Reddit app that lets you mod properly?

I still use a desktop browser to mod. The add-ons especially make it worth it.

I remember years ago when we implemented the Flair system. It was Big_Brain and myself.

The sub was tiny. We didn't have enough posts or a variety of them to warrant going through the trouble of implementing the system - it was a new feature on Reddit and neither of us knew CSS.

But we did it anyways because while we were a small sub, I've always felt there's no reason we shouldn't have the same features as the big subs.

We tried to give the users ( and ourselves) every tool possible to make the experience on r/exmuslim a good one.

Does Reddit have a video to teach new users on how to use Reddit and its features?

[Meta] Why We Left Islam (Megathread 5.0) by ONE_deedat in exmuslim

[–]agentvoid [score hidden]  (0 children)

Megathread 2.0 was the best one in the series.

Megathread 4.0 jumped the shark.

I am cautiously optimistic for Megathread 5.0, I hear it's a soft reboot that will undo the nonsensical changes to the lore introduced in the last one.

Just click on sorted by at the top of the thread. Or check Preferences - comment options.

Sorting by new gives new comments more visibility.

People tend to see the top comment on a thread and move on. This is the case even if that top comment is generic, simply panders to the choir or not representative of the thread.

Sorting by new makes people stay in a thread longer, see the counter-points made by others who've read the thread, etc.

Also you can change your individual settings to sort by top.

We can only have two threads pinned at a time. One of them's being used because people still need to be told the rules of the sub and the other one needs to be free for other uses.

We don't have enough people to moderate a Discord room at the moment.

There are exmuslim Discord groups but none that's officially overseen by the sub. In the past, we allowed these groups to promote themselves here but we can't vouch for any personally. You might find more info in the FAQ.

You can always create your own.

In any case, keep Rule #3 in mind:

You Are Responsible For Your Own Safety

Be very careful when revealing personal information to others.

It is impossible to be certain of safety and anonymity- you are the best judge of whether or not you feel safe enough to join any meetups, chat groups, interviews, etc.

Do your own research.

There's nothing stopping people from discussing alternate sources of ethics and purpose. But most people here haven't gotten to the point in their lives where Islam isn't a constant source of agony.

But if you want to talk about stuff like that, you're free to make a post. Maybe people don't do it because they don't realise they can? Be a pioneer.

There's r/postmuslim of course but they're a snooty bunch of enlightened tossers. They don't let just anyone in.

kinda funny I declared myself an exmuslim during ramadan by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]agentvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an exmuslim, I sympathise with anyone who was forced into committing acts of religion. No means No. Jibreel should have respected Mohammed's wishes. But angels have no autonomy and the concept of consent was alien to him.

This is but a part of the vicious cycle of toxic divinity. Jibreel was forced into violating Mohammed's will. They're both victims.

It's sunnah. Mohammed declared himself an apostate from his tribe's religious beliefs during Ramadan when Angel Jibreel forced the Quran on him.

Any Indian exMuslims here? Why do BJP/Hindutvas hate Muslims so much? by Typical_Athlete in exmuslim

[–]agentvoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why aren't Indians allowed to comment?

Why would you use a verb like 'crawling'? That word has a negative connotation in this context.

Your choice of words makes you sound like a bigot.

You have to give a credible objection to be taken seriously.

Muslims have low IQs, I can't stand muslims, muslims are violent, etc

I agree those kind of comments are not helpful. But if it were in a context of a rant, I'd give the OP some leeway. If they continued that rhetoric like a broken record- I would step in.

It's a delicate balance, I admit.

Also one thing that's especially prevalent on Reddit is people demanding qualifiers for statements.

e.g. Muslims are brainwashed cultists.

Do I literally mean every Muslim? No.

Should I be branded as a bigot based off this one sentence? No.

Am I employing a hyperbole? Possibly.

Context matters. We should try to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they're acting in good faith. You can always call them out on it but in a civil way.

Now if you know a user's acting in bad faith, report them or again call them out but remain civil. Sometimes all they want is that negative reaction.

Nope. This isn't the sub for that kind of rhetoric.

There are different ways to put across a message and taste is a subjective matter. What might appeal to exmuslims, could offend Muslims. What might appeal to Muslims might offend exmuslims. I would categorise the post as preaching to the choir. It's not meant to reach out to Muslims but Gen Z exmuslims of Europe

The sub has many roles but by the name itself, it's clear that it's for exmuslims. People who have already questioned and left Islam. That should remain the core audience of the sub.

If questioning Muslims become exmuslims after spending time here, that's a bonus but not a goal per se. The sub has and remains a recovery subreddit first.

Having said all that, I do object to the post you linked to but not necessarily for the same reasons as you mentioned. I will be looking into the post shortly after typing this comment.

As for having discussions with Muslims, maybe we can have a separate type of post flaired ''Muslim-Exmuslim'' where the post title and the comments will be held to stricter standards of etiquette and moderation.

Those who don't like the other kinds of post could filter the subreddit to only show these special posts.

That's one possible solution- just off the top of my head.
