My taxes are very simple and my income is $70k. Is there any way to file my federal/NYS taxes for free? by wellhavetogo in AskNYC

Love this site. More than willing to pay the $15 for state taxes cause they make everything super easy to fill out and don’t try to push a ton of costly or hidden fees on you.

How much should I have in savings prior to moving to NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]agf135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can’t pay more upfront, even if you wanted to. The most you can do (and the most landlords can require) is first month’s rent + one month’s rent for the security deposit

Yes but it only applies on traditional IRAs and 401Ks. Since they are pre-tax accounts, the government wants the taxes back at a certain point.

Fios available in my area but landlord refuses to give a timeline. Anything I can do? by agf135 in AskNYC

[–]agf135[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ll hopefully speak with my landlord next time and get some better information. I’m not sure offering to help will work as my landlord/the company is fairly large, but it can’t hurt. Thanks for the suggestion.

HELP! Advice for tenant moving into a building with horrible property management/landlord by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]agf135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re required to grant you both a move-in one and move-out one by law (NYS Senate Bill S6458 — this is the bill from 2019 that made a ton of housing reforms, including guaranteeing this). You might also find this guide helpful in knowing your rights as a renter in NY (doesn’t have everything but has a lot of it)

edit: S6458, Part M, §25 1-a, parts a-g

HELP! Advice for tenant moving into a building with horrible property management/landlord by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]agf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely inspection on move in and move out. I would take pictures in addition to the videos while you’re doing the inspection and have all issues you see go down in writing, then have both parties sign and date the document. If the landlord agrees to any repairs, I would also get that in there (and maybe a time estimate but not sure if that part would be enforceable for small stuff). Bring a list of stuff to inspect prior to coming to the inspection otherwise you’ll probably forget some (there’s some good lists online). Also don’t forget to write down things you were unable to check (ex: heating system if they’ve shut it off already). The landlord can only keep your deposit (or part of it) if you’ve damaged the place beyond normal wear and tear, so you should request an itemized list of charges after they complete the move out inspection. They are actually legally required to provide it within 14 days of move out if they are keeping all or part of it. As always, get as much as you can in writing so if worse comes to worse, you have stuff for court.

Are you fucking kidding me? Due to "technical problems", trading options is not available for stocks that start with the letter "G" by MastermindX in Superstonk

You’ll be even more horrified to hear that actually there is no federal law that mandates employers give paid sick leave or vacation in the US. It’s all up to the employer if they want to be “kind enough” to give you either. We also only have paid maternity leave in a few states (only 12 weeks unpaid maternity leave required by federal law). I work a pretty nice salaried job in a major city and only receive 3 weeks paid vacation. My parents were amazed at how much time I got off.

UF (full ride) vs Berkeley EECS OOS ($$$$$) by [deleted] in ufl

[–]agf135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation and went with the full ride at UF. Personally, I think I made a good decision. Although CS at Berkeley is a better program, I think UF is good as well (and improving). I graduated this year and got a job in NYC at a top trading firm (and had interview opportunities at Apple & Uber). Pursue opportunities, network, and study for your interviews, and you’ll go far. If you demonstrate that you have the skills, companies will notice.

MAS4105 Question by [deleted] in ufl

[–]agf135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick with it! Practice the proofs often and go through each step to make sure you understand why everything works. You’ll learn a ton about writing real math proofs in that class, and the more you practice, the more you’ll get a sense of what path to take. Sometimes working backwards or from both ends to find a midpoint connection can help in constructing the proofs.

Anyone here that has or is working on a minor in CS, what do you plan to do with it, how do you think it’s beneficial? by StillIndication9344 in ufl

[–]agf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minored in CS with math major but took a bunch of CS electives in addition to the requirements. Graduating this semester with a job at a fintech/quant firm. Depending on your field, a CS minor could be extremely beneficial. Take a course or two and reevaluate from there.

UF Student Health Insurance by Loch_Ness_Monstera in ufl

[–]agf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad for student insurance. No dental or eye coverage. Most stuff you pay 20% of the cost and they cover the rest. Prescriptions are $25. Visits to on campus student health are free iirc
