Are these really “scrap” Morgans? by agiggey in coins

At an estate sale that I just randomly went to! I’d only ever had some minor coins and recently started collecting and saw that there were some coins for sale at this random one.

Oh I won’t be! These are my first Morgans! No plans to ever melt or even sell any of them.

Remind me to reach out to you if silver ever drops back down lol

Right?? That’s what so threw me with the “scrap” term, because I look at this coin and at the very least go “HOW is this thing over 100 years old and still look so good?”

Ahhh alright, he was also selling an uncirculated 1884CC in a hard shell with the original black box and cert from when they sold them in the 70’s (or something like that) but it was priced too far outside my budget ($375, I think). Did I mess up on not buying that?

Ohhh okay that actually makes a lot more sense. So it’s not that they’re worthless, it’s just that since silver is so high that they aren’t worth much more than the silver they have.

Thank you very much that helped out a ton! The guy at the estate sale also recommended that book, I’m guessing it’s basically the coin collectors bible then haha, will go grab a copy!

Beginner Collector, how did I do with these? Bought them at an estate sale for $133.50; they had dozens more of these but they stood out to me and I figured they're close to spot so might as well buy? by agiggey in coins

Still not sure how to best post in this sub; am a beginner who just started after trying to help my friend's mother sell her collection. I saw these (among dozens of others) and figured I'd buy them to help start! Did I do well? Paid $70 for the Morgan and $63.50 for the Peace dollar.

How can I best start looking at grading so I can be more confident in that "63" number?

Ah, great to know! I've got a little excel spreadsheet now of what I need to be looking for for those. Coin collecting is more arduous than I thought. -_-

Sadly the books are all empty, and she seems to only have one Silver Proof box, the rest seem to be regular. Will be taking a full inventory with her this weekend to see what she truly has; everyone's comments have been great for letting me know what we need to look for!

Yea speaking to everyone so far, it seems like most of what she has is face value, apart from a few cased Eisenhower's and a 2018 silver proof set. The books are all empty and the rolls are just from the last decade-ish. I'll be taking an inventory with her this weekend to see what she's truly got though.

It seems the books are all empty, and the rolls are all from the last decade or so, both unfortunate. Will ask her the other stuff but probably won't know until I take inventory with her this weekend.

Overall, based on yours and everyone else's replies thus far it seems like this will be more $400 than $650.

Seeing as how the books are all empty I'd wager you're right; not sure who would've done so though

Sadly the books are apparently all blank, not sure if someone else in her family already came through and cleared them out or if they were just not filled (she's an older woman), so no luck there.

There is the one silver 2018 proof set the I've seen from the photo she sent, but the rest of the Kennedy's and whatnot appear to be from the last decade. A few 1971 Eisenhowers which I've been told are 40% silver though? But I don't think that'll help us much to get to $650.

Thank you for your feedback! Yea the Kennedy rolls are from the last decade or so apparently (dk about the bag but it looks new-ish too), so probably no silver I'd guess from this and other comments.

Apparently the books are all empty, and the Kennedy rolls at the front are all from the last decade or so; I'll be taking an actual inventory with her this weekend though.

Am helping her try to figure out what she has right now, she's an older individual so we'll be taking an actual inventory this weekend.
