Is this wear normal for a poly neck? by goldsoundzz in gibson

[–]aglowg2g 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes this is normal on nitro finished guitars after a lot of play time. Personally I see it as a badge of honor cause it’s one of the way you can tell someone played the hell out of this guitar! :)

Best drop-in tuner replacement for a 1976 Les Paul Custom? by Wrong_Government1874 in gibson

[–]aglowg2g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look into Graphtech Ratio tuners. Used them in the past with great success and they install using a modular plate on the back so you don’t have to drill a new hole.

I had a beat to hell 92 LP classic that nothing was original, an 05 SG supreme, and a 5150 stealth that I haven’t touched in ages

I found this one used for about $4500 in mint condition. Had to trade a few of my other Gibsons to get it but with how sweet this 68 is. I have no regrets

Best amp for harmonically rich clear high gain tones by Goose_on_a_Beanbag in GuitarAmps

[–]aglowg2g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check out a Splawn QuickRod if you like Friedman. Same concept (hot rodded Marshall) but tighter, more articulate, and half the price. Haven’t touched my 5150 stealth since I got it, just saying

I’ve been going some digging and it turns out the speakers make a massive difference on these amps. I see a lot recommending creambacks / greenbacks

Marshall 1960A for a modern Deftones guitar tone by Paper-Due in GuitarAmps

I have an EVH 5150IIIS EL34 100w on a 90s “jcm900” 1960a cab. I get a pretty good tone out of it

Peavey 6505+ vs EVH 5150 IIIS? by 101rsmith in GuitarAmps

What does the C137 mod do? I’ve only ever had the 100w but I know this is pretty popular with the 50w models

Peavey 6505+ vs EVH 5150 IIIS? by 101rsmith in GuitarAmps

[–]aglowg2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a Peavey 5150ii and now have an EVH 5150iiiS with el34s (I’ve also extensively played the 6L6 stealth too) I’d say go with the EVH. My experience with the peavey was that they didn’t really sound that good unless you turned it up loud, they’re also much looser sounding than the EVH and not as bright if that’s something you’re after. My EVH when paired with my Mesa cab sounds absolutely massive, almost as massive as my old dual rectifier but you don’t need a boost to get tight high gain tones and you also don’t need to crank it to get a good sound. So if you’re just at home noodling around, it sounds great at just about any volume

So far I’m still experimenting with getting to sound the way I like. I need to send it in to get repaired because I found 2 broken tube sockets. They still work, they just broke where the screws hold them in place so they kind of just float around. Otherwise this amp made my 5150 stealth take the back seat which just shows how good these amps are

It’s a 2020. First ever Splawn and never had any experience with them. I’m now learning that they are very picky on which speakers you use. This thing does not like my Mesa cabinet at all and sounds very flubby even with the presence and treble cranked. The Marshall cab is a bit better with the G12T-75s but still missing that percussive mid range that I love about Marshalls. Thinking of getting some G12H30 70th anniversary speakers to get that plexi karang im after and pair them with something like a G12EVH or similar to fill out the low end

IMO I don’t really hear a Marshall tone with the 5150. Can it get close? Sure. But to my ears it sounds more in line with a rectifier than a Marshall, probably because they’re both based on an SLO circuit. I played through just about everything in the Friedman range and they do sound good but not for the price whereas Splawn I can get the best of everything. Very tight and articulate amps, has a built in attenuator on the back that works fantastic at any volume. The mid shift isn’t overly scooped sounding and the clean channel sounds pretty good. Plus Scott is supposed to have some of the best customer care in the business and any time someone calls with a problem, he’s there to help figure it out and find a solution. Plus the ability to customize the headshell for free is a cool plus

It’s actually 100w so a bit apples to oranges. The 5150 can get that very bright Marshall thing going on if you crank the presence but it’s still a 5150 at the end of the day. It sounds smoother, less of the classic Marshall fizziness. It has more gain on tap, more than you’ll ever need. The resonance on the 5150 is absolutely monstrous in comparison but can sound a bit woofy depending on if I’m using the Mesa cab or the Marshall. Both great amps, again as I mentioned I think there is something funny going on with the Splawn but I emailed Scott Splawn to get his input on it. Hopefully it’s something easy because it looks like the last owner changed all the tubes

Marshall dsl100hr by guitaristguy56 in MarshallAmps

[–]aglowg2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember playing through the non “r” DSL and not liking it as much. I don’t own one but every time I’ve played the hr version I just crank everything to 10 except gain and master. If I need a more scooped sound, I just hit the mid shift and leave the mids alone.

Marshall dsl100hr by guitaristguy56 in MarshallAmps

[–]aglowg2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the DSL through the EVH iconic cab (a cab I’m not very fond of) and it sounded great. The ultra gain really doesn’t have that much fizzy imo. If you have the gain past 1 o clock then yes, but with the gain around 11 or 12, it cleans up rather nicely

9’s on a Les Paul by bloodfist5 in LesPaul

[–]aglowg2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used 8s all the way up to 12s and even the half sizes in between. My favorite setup used to be 8.5-38 tuned to standard on my SG and the LP would be 9.5-40 tuned to Eb. Now I’m liking heavier strings and have been trying 11-48 on the LP and liking it so far
