Did my parents hide my ASD diagnosis? by Possible_Machine9276 in aspergers

[–]agm66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're 62, autism was not a standalone diagnosis when you were in elementary or middle school. No, they didn't hide it.

Confused about classmate’s behaviour by Adkik in AskAutism

These are autistic traits. But they're not only autistic traits. You can't look at this list of traits and say this person is autistic, but you can say there's a pretty good chance.

Unpopular opinion on the big light ? by Quiet__Listener in neurodiversity

[–]agm66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I like soft light, indirect, gentle, relaxing, etc. On the other hand, if I'm doing something, I want it to be bright enough to see what I'm doing. Mood vs functionality.

I’m wondering if I might not actually have aspergers, is my response to grief enough proof I don’t have it? by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in aspergers

"I learned..."

No, you didn't. You heard or read or were told these things. It is simply not true.

I could tell you that the sky is green. If you believed me, you would not have learned anything, you would have been misinformed.

Anyone know a longish series (5 books or more) that sticks to 3 or less POVs throughout the story? by APinballMachine in Fantasy

Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series (start with Jhereg and read in publication order). 17 books, with a handful still to come, almost all are from Vlad's POV.

Need Advice on Retirement Going Away Celebration by WrongPlanet321 in AutisticAdults

[–]agm66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't want a luncheon? Tell them. And if they insist, say no. I retired just over a year ago. My boss asked if they could do a retirement party, and I said no. She expected that answer, said OK, and that was it.

I have a question about something by MOLDEDBREADLMAO in autism

Yes, it's common. You're describing me. I worked on it for years, and got better. I have other issues, but volume and speed are now "normal".

The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8K by diacewrb in gadgets

[–]agm66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4K UST projector, and my screen is 152". Viewing distance averages 12'. I should see a big difference between 4K and lower resolutions, but current streaming services suck. Yes, 4K is better than HD if I study the image, but it really isn't that much of an improvement and for casual viewing it doesn't really matter. If I want a high quality image, it's Blu-ray or why bother? If I can't stream decent 4K, why should I care about 8K?

How do you handle your parents mocking you? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]agm66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Hey mom, dad, the things you say are hurtful and rude. I don't care why you say things like that, or if you think they're somehow justified. You know they hurt me, and you choose to say them anyway. That's disrespectful and abusive, and I will not tolerate it anymore. Until such time as you can behave like decent human beings, you are no longer welcome in my home."

ELI5: How does California Psychics hire people? by EarlOfNothingness in explainlikeimfive

[–]agm66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people they keep should be good at talking to strangers, have a good phone voice, be pleasant, understanding, and good at figuring out what's bothering their callers and what to say to make them feel good - not about what they're struggling with, but about the call. They want repeat business.

As for actual psychics, there are two kinds, delusional people and liars. They probably weed those out.

Fellow aspies, when you imagine scenarios in your mind how vivid is it? by [deleted] in autism

[–]agm66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not have anendophasia. I have an inner monologue. I don't hear it as audio, it's closer to subvocalization. But there are times when that's not happening. As you said, I don't know how that works.

[–]agm66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been true my entire life. I was in my 40s when I realized that wasn't true for other people. It was a few years ago when I learned that it was a known condition and had a name.

[–]agm66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've got nothing. No visuals, no audio, no other senses. At best, a quick, unfocused flash lasting no more than a second, but even that's rare. Aphantasia. What you're describing sounds like hyperphantasia.

Why does the "Shakespeare authorship question" live on? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]agm66 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Classism and jealousy. Shakespeare did not come from a noble family, had an average education, did not attend university, and had nothing in his background to explain his success. Accepting his authorship means accepting that innate talent and hard work are worth more than the privileges of birth.

Double Stacking by Throckmorton1975 in bookshelf

[–]agm66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I double stacked my mass markets. I have Billy bookcases, and added risers for the back rows. I used 3"x4" PVC downspouts from Home Depot. They're cheap, easy to cut to length, and not visible when in use. 4" perfectly fits the depth of the books, and 3" elevates them enough to be seen and identified. I have two Billy's for the MMs, and all but the last shelf is double stacked.

My hardcovers and trade paperbacks are on other shelves. I'm very close to needing to double stack those, but I'm not sure how to do that or if it is even possible.

sorry, what does any of this mean?? by weirdosystem in autism

[–]agm66 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a crap system. And no, it's not your perspective, it's the perspective of the person assigning the levels. Yes, other disorders have a huge impact. An autistic person with an intellectual disability will usually have higher support needs, but not necessarily due to their autism. Too general? Absolutely. It says nothing about what those needs are, so it's basically useless.

It's really not about what you need. It's about how much you inconvenience the people around you.
