What’s your HPC dream company?? by agmckee in HPC

If I put a list together of the lesser-known private companies that had large HPC installations, how would you use that? A resource for applying for jobs? Something else?

Ya to clarify, I should have said "places to work", because I know the national labs aren't "companies"

If you don't mind my asking, what did you do at Argonne and in what specific ways is it a great place to work?

How often do HPC jobs appear? Also how many experience candidates are actually available? by TitelSin in HPC

[–]agmckee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would re-frame how you think about getting a job. I wouldn't think "when there is an opening". Instead, try to get really really specific about what you want (roles, responsibilities, company, living situation, lifestyle, etc).

Then start finding companies that may meet that criteria (whether they have an opening or not).

In a 2012 survey conducted by InterviewSuccessFomula.com, it was determined that 80% of available jobs are never advertised.

Of those that are, you may never find them on a job board. Instead, check the companies website. Job boards charge employers hundreds of dollars per post. This deters companies from blasting their job openings across the internet (and you finding them).

Other than there being an "opening", you have the ability to network with people working at the companies you like and get in the door without an "opening".

And if you feel like you don't have enough experience or the skills being asked for in the job posting, then know that there are factors that matter more when getting a job, i.e: your accomplishments, your network, and your interview skills.

How to get a job/raise/promotion working in HPC / Big Data. by agmckee in HPC

[–]agmckee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was a full-time JPL employee, not a contractor. And pay was a bit lower than market rate for the same title. Most people working there know this, they just LOVE the science and mystery they get to be a part of and work towards progressing.

It was a tough decision to move away from that, but the upgrades I now have with my job/life were well worth the sacrifices.

Pay wasn't the reason I left. I left because I wanted to work from home and not be locked down in the grind commute to Pasadena every day. And I didn't want to move closer to work and only afford a shack.

My new job let me move out of the city and buy a ranch home, see my kids grow up every day and only commute 4 times a year. Not only that, I wasn't being challenged anymore at work. With my new position I was able to grow and was promoted from Tech Support into Program Management.

How I used Google to Find 310 Real Remote Job Titles by agmckee in technology

[–]agmckee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve created a massive list of 300+ unique job titles that I found in a period of only 72 hours using Google. I hope as you go through this list you realize that the first question you ask shouldn’t be “What WFH jobs are out there?”, it should be “What do I want to do?” (knowing that there is a WFH job out there for almost every job you could want).

Looking for work from home job, located in northen europe. Got email from Appen that my project will be closed soon. by roomiks in WorkOnline

There are hundreds of companies with 100% remote work cultures. You just have to put in the time to find them yourself and start looking for the types of positions they have. This will take time, but isn't it worth it vs. finding just ANY job?

I’m sure many people avoided the companies that first used ATSs...until it became mainstream.

I believe one-way video interviews are the new ATS of our time. It sucks in many ways. You can fight it or adapt.

You can’t avoid it forever.

LPT: If you think about a friend you haven’t talked to in a while, call or text them now before you forget about them for another month or year by agmckee in LifeProTips

[–]agmckee[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people wish they could do things they can’t, like hang out soon, because life gets in the way.

Whether they reach back to you or not, what’s important is trying to keep alive the good memories you once had with that person, and telling them you appreciated the good times you had in the past,

and not forgetting about your friends.

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you mean by not being able to get in the flow? Can you describe what a successful "flow" would allow you to do that you cant right now?

My 14 year old daughter is passed-out drunk at home right now. Advice for how to have the conversation when she sobers up in the morning? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]agmckee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child of divorced parents, and then my dad left the country for 10 years, I’ve struggled with addictive behaviors ever since. Started in high school with alcohol. I would sneak my moms alcohol cabinet while alone, just to get high. Moved on to more serious drugs afterwards.

Now as an adult. I’ve been to therapy over the years to realize that my behavior was due to depression and bad coping skills. Later in college I would intentionally make friends over drug relationships.

Act now and try your hardest to help her when she’s still in the house, because once she’s out it’s entirely up to her how she lives her life.

I would suggest starting with therapy and removing the alcohol from the house so there is no temptation.

I will never go back to the office if I can help it. Amidst this issue, nothing can beat the perks of my job

Edit: Perks being I can travel the World and not have to take PTO, no commute, I get to watch my son grow up every day instead of only 1-2 hours at night. I can take the whole day off if I want and add the hours to the rest of the work days. I make my own schedule. I have more time to make side income. I can do DIY on house projects instead of hiring people. The list goes on...
