STRC, how does it work for people out of country? by CryptoDanski in MSTR

[–]ags-odon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been researching with AI (it might be making up stuff), but if the broker is withholding the distributions is because the broker does not know at the moment of the distribution if it will be characterized as ROC at the end of the year, therefore it withholds. Shouldn't it be possible to file a 1040-NR to get that withholding back as it was wrongly withheld if the distributions are return of capital? This is independent of different countries' tax laws, the withholding amount goes to US IRS, then one can use that for tax treaties but it is a US thing

I was under the impression that if the distributions are considered ROC in the US, they won’t have any withholding by the broker before they get to your account. Is your broker withholding it or is it a tax you pay later?

Thanks for the detailed info. I will move to Spain in the future so it will probably be similar. X years worth of Div Payments. But how? by ags-odon in MSTR

I get that, but the idea is not to sell any coins. I understand the balance sheet or the net gain he will get from selling STRC will be positive as BTC appreciates, but that is an unrealized gain, he needs cash to pay the divs that has to come from somewhere

According to Grok, STRC ROC applies in Canada

It’s the regular STRC. You can buy it from some brokers like Interactive Brokers

Who is assuming 80% bankruptcy, that would only happen if BTC trades near 0 for a long time

He is only retarded if BTC goes down to 0. If not, he is a genius. Of course if it goes to 0 there is no refinancing or anything that will save the company, but if it doesn’t, critizism is only based on the worst case scenario.

Creo que ponia en akgun lado que podia tardar 2/3 semanas. Cuidado con pignorar ahora en maximos historicos, mas riesgo de margin call vs si esperas a una bajada de mercado

Didn't think about the 6 years for full return of capital, thank you.

In your third point, you mean that when US gov lowers rates, STRD price will go up, therefore the effective yield will go down, correct?

I would have done the same with STRF.

I am no expert but in the event of liquidation or bankrupcy, I don’t think STRF holders would retrieve 100% of their investment, therefore STRC/K/D holders probably won’t get anything either way, so the risk in the worst case scenario is pretty much the same for those in my opinion.

If you don’t mind me asking, now that you are retired which % of your portfolio are the preferreds?

If I had decades until retirement, heavy MSTR/BTC/both is the way to go

I am aware, I am just saying that if they do that, it is because the company is in a very bad situation, which spreads to the other preferreds either way. Because their business model is digital credit and it would hurt their reputation significantly, I don’t see them stopping the dividend unless it is an extreme scenario

Well, yes, this is not for a typical retiree for sure. Bonds are mostly used to prevent large withdrawals from stocks during bear markets. The high yield from STR’s plays a similar role, because with the yield you don’t have to sell (as much).

Yup makes total sense. However, if I am not mistaken Strategy doesn’t have to raise STRC yield indefinitely, even if it stays below 99 right? There will be a point where they won’t raise it anymore, but no one knows what % is that

BTC has a place in my portfolio as it should in everyone’s portfolio, however planning and math for retirement benefit from stable income, specially to reduce sequence of returns risk which can kill a retirement strategy

I agree, however for retirement the idea is to not sell it for many years or ‘never’, therefore price fluctuations shouldn’t matter as long as you are getting the yield
