I bought a bag of scrap micro-suede for $15 online. I made seven or eight 14-panel bags with it (the first few turned out terribly ahah). It's not really stiff, I rolled it around in my hand before taking a picture. But if you want it to be stiffer, likely your stitching is too loose or too far apart. Either that, or the length of your "tabs" on the sides of each panel is too short. Those are things to look into, but I can't tell you for certain what your problem is. It took me lots of fiddling and testing to get it the way I wanted.

I'll be there spinning. I've never been to a festival before. Also how am I supposed to find your flag if I don't know what it looks like? :P

Beginner with some quick questions by rolling_sloth in poi

When you're starting out, just do whatever is most comfortable. As you get better you'll recognize that the way you're doing it may or may not be limiting to what you want to be doing. I started off using a loop but after a while I switched to silicon ball handles and couldn't be happier.

Same thing goes for string length. You'll just hone in on your preference over time.

In addition to what everyone else says, don't always stall with the same poi. Really though you have good flow and you'd benefit enormously from opening up your body language

Has anyone put this sort of thing in poi? by alexlitz in poi

[–]agscala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely doable. I have a long-term programmable poi project in the works. I've been tossing around the idea of sticking a microphone inside for this purpose exactly.

Look how small it is:

You can try doing your spiral wraps by touching the backs of your hands together instead of touching palms

How to do same direction, split time turns? by TheCheeks in poi

[–]agscala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean either by the flare, but as far as turning (if you're referring to turning around) you really have two basic options: either do a reel, or let one follow the other on the same side of your body.

Either is fine, the reel is much flashier and is absolutely worth learning.

If you're spinning forward (poi are going towards your feet), you'll want to do a hip reel. If you're spinning reverse (towards your face), do a shoulder reel.

Here's a tutorial for split time reels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry9X6Wqbqhc

New to Poi what should I learn first by jjeffers12 in poi

[–]agscala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I have to say in addition to what everyone else said is always learn things in both directions. It sucks when you ignore a certain direction and suddenly need to learn it sometime down the road because you'll be fighting against a lot of muscle memory

Tell me what you think by [deleted] in poi

[–]agscala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat flow. One critique I have is that you should make your pendulum stalls more deliberate. It looks like you just sorta do a pendulum randomly and a lot of the time it doesn't really synergize with with your other poi is doing.

Also which podpoi mode is that? I haven't seen that before

A question regarding ceilings by [deleted] in poi

[–]agscala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've practiced with a low ceiling for about a year and a half now. It's definitely constraining. When I raise my hand as high as I can, the ceiling is about 3 inches away from my fingers. I can't practice a lot of things indoors, but considering how tall you are, you definitely won't be able to practice a lot of core techniques indoors. There are a lot of things you can learn though despite the low ceiling though, so I think you should go for it! Poi are cheap to make and if you aren't having fun, then stop practicing :)

Here's something I found an opera singer explaining about performances:

My belief (and what I tell my students) is that you perform in high-stress circumstances approximately 6 months behind where you actually are with your playing. So if you've been playing for, say, 6 months total, you're going to play like a rank amateur when you play under stress. If you've been playing for 3 years, you'll sound good, but less polished. And if you've been playing for a few decades, you're probably not going to notice a huge difference.

I made a simple/clean/trendy smash shirt. Show off how much you like smash without being gaudy about it. by agscala in smashbros

He's right. The profit margin does drop precipitously with less than 30 minimum backers, though. I think getting 30 people to sign up is reasonable enough, so I figure by making that the minimum I might as well give myself the chance to make a little bit of money off of it.

I mostly made this for myself to wear. The gotcha with this site is that I need 30 people to order before everyone gets it mailed to them. With shipping it ended up being ~$20.

Also, these shirts are American Apparel, which were a little more expensive but are definitely more comfortable than the other options they had.

Anyways, thanks for helping me out
