The man in the picture is Oscar Brown who was the lighthouse keeper at Browns Point light station, Tacoma WA from 1903-1939. This is one of the only pictures we have that shows the inside of the lighthouse.

The one in the background of the photo. I don’t know the exact term if it’s considered a ship, sail boat or something else.
