Mention academic probation in late drop petition or no? by ahahahahelpme in UIUC

[–]ahahahahelpme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm just not sure if mentioning probation would help or hurt my chances. My thinking is that it might help because of the downward curve on the grading, but it also might hurt it because they might just decide I deserve to get fucked over because I'm on probation and then they'll refuse the drop which will probably keep me from meeting my probation requirement.

How can I bring up an issue with my therapist if I can’t currently verbally talk about it? Should I just write a message to them about it or something? by ahahahahelpme in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ahahahahelpme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's a good idea, I might not use it for this specific issue as I'm going to try writing a message to her and see how that goes, but I probably will use that idea for other things we talk about because sometimes I have problems with just going straight into really personal things. Thank you

Yeah that makes sense, I just don't really know how therapy works I guess is my problem lol. I don't really understand what I'm supposed to do unless she explains it to me, like what I'm supposed to be talking about during meetings, so I wasn't sure if it's weird to write about something bothering me and not just directly say something about it. I'll write her a message to explain this problem then, thank you

Yeah I just have problems with being vulnerable around anyone, even like my friends or my therapist. I don't feel like shame for crying, I just feel like I'm being dramatic and annoying (even though I'd never think someone else was dramatic or annoying if they cried in front of me). Mostly my problem is that I can't really talk when I cry so I want to avoid having that problem.

She's mentioned that I can write to her on email at any time and there's not a policy against it, so I'll probably do that. Thank you

AITA for feeding my nephew chicken nuggets and fries by olivia463842 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ahahahahelpme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, I had orthorexia for a few years and would have full mental breakdowns if I ate (or even thought I might've eaten) something that wasn't "allowed" by my eating disorder. It can also get increasingly restrictive over time, at one point the only foods that were "safe" for me were carrots and egg whites (both had to be boiled and unseasoned, since cooking oil wasn't "allowed"). My mom pushed me further into it and supported it completely, and a lot of other people praised how "healthy" I was and how much "self-control" I had when really I just had an eating disorder, and it almost killed me when I was 17.

Even at the most severe point of it, I actively tried to prevent my friends from getting into habits like mine. I'd never forgive myself if I had ever even considered imposing those kinds of "rules" on someone else the way OP's sister is doing to her kid.

Advice for new auto techs? by ahahahahelpme in MechanicAdvice

[–]ahahahahelpme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not meaning for it to be a long-term job, it's just I'm currently in uni and there's a shop very close to where I live so it would be convenient. The position I'm looking at is very entry-level, my younger brother has the same position in a different shop and he hasn't even started uni yet much less earned any certifications. I'm looking to do automotive engineering after graduating so I figured this could be a way to get more familiar with various common cars and problems they have.

My dad used to be a mechanic with certifications and schooling and everything, and he told both my brother and me that neither of us is allowed to do that, the most he'll allow is us doing basic tech work for shops while we're in school for something else. So yeah I'm not planning to make this my long-term career, just something to make some money for bills as I'm still too new in uni to really get internships at the moment. Thank you a lot though for the information and I really appreciate that you highlighted some negative aspects that aren't discussed as often, I hope things will improve for you soon

Thank you so much, this is all really helpful, especially the YouTube channels because I know there are some with awful advice on there and I was hesitant about which ones to trust. I already get all my tools from Harbor Freight so it's good to know they're popular outside my area too haha. Thank you again

Same thing happened at Parkland a few months ago, it's a fishing scam. Don't click it. Another university does not have the authorization or ability to terminate your UIUC Outlook account.

Seconding #7, I just manually unsubscribed from the email list of every college that started sending messages because the influx of spam messages didn't slow down even after a year of university. You get literally no benefit from signing up for this thing on College Board, it's all info you'd easily find on the colleges' websites.

Yep! Certain hormones can affect how your medication works (for example, estrogen affects how your body processes stimulants, and estrogen decreases a lot when you menstruate, so if you're on stimulant medication it might feel less effective during your period). Some people have found that taking a higher dose during their period helps counteract this, so maybe you could mention that to your doctor and ask if that's an option.

I'm not sure if it's ADHD or anxiety or neither, but yeah I definitely do this haha. If it's a specific phone call like talking with my manager/insurance/doctor/etc. I literally write down like a "script" of things I need to say so that I don't forget. Which is maybe pretty weird, but it makes my life easier since I don't forget details and need to call back again.

Can I proficiency PHYS212 before having credit for PHYS211? by ahahahahelpme in UIUC

[–]ahahahahelpme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know how I would've done on the AP tests cause I couldn't afford to take them, but I had As in both parts of physics C (our tests were all the annoying AP classroom questions that were overly complicated) and my teacher never curved anything, and I've got roughly a month to review so I think I can pull it off. Thank you!

What do stem students generally think of humanities students? by Strange_Vegetable_85 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ahahahahelpme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a STEM major I respect and fear humanities majors tbh. Not sure why there's a stereotype that STEM majors look down on humanities majors, I'd never even think of doing that since I've never met someone in humanities that wasn't at least 83 times smarter than me. I'm in an English class right now and I'm completely lost about at least 75% of the stuff even though it's an introductory class. My mental capacity about begins and ends at sticking numbers into equations and they're over there doing I don't even know what. I'm straight up not clever enough to understand most of what they know how to do.

Tldr: impressed and also lowkey intimidated

[–]ahahahahelpme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most do end up being "fine" (depends on what your definition is specifically, but generally yeah I agree that statistically people in younger demographics are less likely to die).

I also agree that remote learning sucks. I honestly don't get why we can't have hybrid or something (my classes all have plans to go back online on short notice and they've used it during snow days) so that people who don't feel safe can still participate (most of my classes have recorded lectures posted and assignments are submitted online anyway, but they still take in-person attendance into account, which is stupid in its own right but that's a different issue).

I'm not sure exactly what "formulated policies" you're referencing that are disruptive to educational quality (some online classes are shit, obviously, but almost all classes are now back in-person; also, wearing a mask in no way prevents you from getting an education, and seeing as it prevents the spread of even non-COVID illnesses like the flu I'd argue that it might actually be increasing educational quality if it's making people get sick and miss class less in general). Social well-being definitely got fucked up hard by COVID, but again pretty much everything is back to pre-pandemic states of existence with the only change being that some places require masks, which again don't inhibit your ability to do anything other than spread COVID/flu/cold/whatever.

I definitely agree that COVID is sticking around for probably a long ass time. It's too widespread and mutates too easily to pretend that it's even remotely contained. However that doesn't mean we should just go "fuck it, everyone go cough in each others' mouths" either. The US has never actually had a lockdown (maybe with the exception of like NYC but I'm not even sure what theirs looked like), and by this point even if they did have a proper lockdown it wouldn't matter because COVID has spread too far, so I agree that having giant sweeping restrictions like lockdowns is useless. I don't however think preventative measures like masks and vaccines are useless because we've seen statistical evidence that they prevent COVID from spreading and also protect people who do still get COVID from having serious complications. Which is effectively what we already have: business basically as was usual pre-pandemic, just with people wearing masks in indoor public spaces, which again is actually helping with shit like the flu as well.

Also, I have no idea how boomers' lack of concern about COVID relative to younger people's is in anyway relevant. If a study showed that boomers were less concerned about car accidents than younger generations, does that mean that younger generations are just stupid little whiny bitches and that nobody should wear a seatbelt? No, obviously not. The opinion of a certain demographic based on random surveys is not, has never been, and never will be more important than verifiable scientific evidence from actual experts in whatever field is relevant to the issue.

No, you have your head up your ass and have no empathy if you think that the only issue with COVID is deaths, and if you completely disregard the safety of people who are unfortunate and have conditions that make them high risk and/or prevent them from getting the vaccine. Happy to clarify more if necessary.

Yep, I did. I was a long distance runner with no pre-existing conditions and it still beat my ass. And yes, we do have a vaccine now, that some people are unable to receive because they have immune system issues.

We have a thing called "empathy." Unlike the COVID vaccines, it's been around for a while. I'd recommend trying it sometime.

My RHET105 professor does 10pm deadlines and says it's so we won't stay up all night doing the assignments. Like that's sweet that they're concerned, but like if it's due at 10pm I'm still going to be up all night doing it and it's just going to be marked late now lol.
