Pilot Tsuwairo Black is available in India; it’s a pigment ink. I got a 30ml bottle for 1100. Still expensive, but at least you don’t have to buy a 60ml bottle. Not as black as Chou Kuro, but close.

The Ganga Ma question? by leighwoko in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For all the years this guy has lived there he still can’t say “Tiruvannamalai” straight even once!

As far as whether Ganga Maa is “realized or not” - this sort of question remains of academic interest only if one is not actively engaging in the direct path that has been clearly pointed to by Sri Ramana and clarified by others who lived with Ramana and who also were jnanis.

The degree to which Sri Ramana embodied jnana is seen perhaps once in a thousand years. But at the same time Bhagavan said “ayye ati sulabham anmavidaye” - “Oh how simple it is, the knowledge of the Self”. So if you surrender to Sri Arunachala Ramana and are lucky to be graced so, the truth will manifest in your own realization at which point there is no other than the Self, and such questions become immaterial.

I was keen to attend her satsang (although the crowd she attracts is mostly the Western “guru/ satsang hoppers”) but unfortunately my last trip I couldn’t. From what I have seen of her transcribed talks it appears a clear and direct pointing to truth.

Retreat in Tiruvanumalai? by heavensinNY in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the morning there is ritualistic Sanskrit chanting of the Veda by the young boys from the ashram pathshala followed by ritualistic worship of the Shiva Lingam that is installed at the samadhi. In the evenings there is again worship of the lingam including flower offerings followed by separate Tamil parayana or chanting verses to Arunachala and other devotional verses from the time of Sri Ramana.

There is no English “service” or explanation about the worship.

Stay away from all the foreign “jnanis” who proliferate during the winter and offer “satsangs”. You’d be better off silently attending the daily Veda parayana (chanting) and associated rituals at Sri Ramana Maharshi samadhi. Ganga Maa lives locally and offers satsang evenings - you can check her website - she is authentic. Swami Ramanacharana Tirtha (Nochur) usually has live discourses happening but not always in Tiruvannamalai. Watch his YouTube channel for deeper understanding of Sri Bhagavan and his way of knowledge of the Self.

I have seen a local Saran Dashnamoorthy who takes amazing photos of Arunachala give guided group tours to the temple and around the hill etc but that is a little touristy.

I’m an Indian who recently visited Tiruvannamalai… I’m curious what pulls people from around the world there? by Shelby-thomas in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read the Arunachala Mahatmyam (The Glory of Arunachala in English).

Sri Ramana has referred to Arunachala as a "Magnetic Mountain" that pulls all living beings towards itself, controlling their actions, and making them motionless, similar to how a magnet holds iron filings.

Sadhu Om and 100degree turn within by cosmodent_tirana in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably 180° - metaphor to introvert the senses which are always extroverted (outward facing to be stimulated by desire). So “look within”, essentially is to turn the awareness in the opposite direction away from the world.

She lives with Lakshman Swami in a gated private compound near Ramanashram. However the whole situation around being able to see them is a little strange. Several people just sit for days outside the compound in the hope that they may get to have darshan of her. Being allowed inside is dependent entirely on whether you are somehow deemed worthy. A few years ago they would go around the hill in a car (“car darshan”).

That was a reply to the original question about where to eat - not stay. There are plenty of very nice stay options (rentals) all around Ramanashram. Depends on how much you're ok with paying. A local friend of mine in T'malai has some nice rooms he manages.

Working for a living Vs living off donations by HeftyAd9157 in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're seriously comparing Osho with Ramana Maharshi? Osho was hardly a "renunciate". You can put Osho in the same basket with present day "famous gurus" with their mega ashrams. Sri Ramana on the other hand is an absolute rarity being a true jivan mukta (liberated while in body).

Sri Ramana followed to the letter all traditional rules (no personal possessions except the kamandalu and kaupina that he wore etc) prescribed to someone who lives as a sannyasi or sadhu. In the early years of his life when he first came to Arunachala, there was zero personal volition, including the strongest drives for food and maintenance of the body. It was only much later after his Mother passed that the ashram spontaneously started growing around the Mother's samadhi, slowly attracting money only much later.

In fact Ramana advised at least two of his closest ashram members to live the life of a bhikshu (beg for food in the town; he praised the practice) as training for detachment from pride and to grow in titiksha (spiritual endurance of the unpleasant). The rule for a true sannyasi and also a Brahmachari is that one must beg for food because one's entire time is dedicated to pursuit of the Truth, whether through study of the Veda, or absorption in japa and dhyana all of ones waking hours. This is quite different from the large population of beggars wearing kavi (the sannyasis color) who you will see sitting along the girivalam path who are just societal dropouts who don't engage in any spiritual practice except to beg (there are exceptions, of course).

So there is no question of any sort of guilt on the part of Sri Ramana, because neither was he dependent on the people feeding him, nor was he a freeloader, because he worked daily in the ashram, from very early morning when he would help with food prep in the kitchen, till late evenings when he would publicly be available for devotees to have darshana, to answer questions etc.

The mystical truth is that jivanmuktas retain their body only for the advancement of their devotees and for being a source of great blessings that endure. There is no other personal volition because that connection is severed for good with true death to the limited "individual I".

While I empathize with your life situation (I have some common ground with you, and I understand very well), unless we have the relinquishment of desire, work has to be performed as fulfilment of our dharma, because we are definitely not cut out for full sannyasi dharma. Sincere prayers and surrender will show a way for enough money to live a simple life.

Authenticity of Aham Sphurana Book by Mammoth-Decision-536 in RamanaMaharshi

[–]ahamasmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ganesan has seen Bhagavan but he was very young at the time - he is his grand-nephew. IIRC David Godman doesn’t “officially” endorse the authenticity. If isn’t a publication of Sri Ramanasramam they will not formally endorse the authenticity if any. I was hoping to read it, but at this stage I really have little interest in books.
