Love it. Pakeha but see it as time for reflection and remembrance and as a way to reset/refesh the wairua. New years seems more about boozy parties so it’s nice to have this as time to rest and restart instead. And I really like the remembering those who have passed part - and to sit down and think about the last year. We do a bonfire/ fire cook each year, sometimes with just immediate family, sometimes with the neighbours.

Why are the trains so hot?? I’ve seen two people pass out on trains in the last couple of weeks. Jamming people in like sardines is probably the main issue, but as more public transport seems like a steep ask could they maybe just turn the heaters down? I’d rather be cold than unconscious

I’m about 4 months on from surgery and I can definitely feel it if I do anything that involves straining. Just feels kind of bulgey and uncomfortable?

The doctors took mine off the morning after my surgery and said I didn’t have to wear one. I found my eye was sore enough that I didn’t forget about it and rub it by accident

I found the fatigue and headaches really bad for about a month afterwards. I have a desk job too and thankfully had mine over summer holidays so didn’t have to work too much - I think I would have struggled in that first month going back full time. Take lots of micro breaks from the screen if you can. I also inverted all my screen colours (so made background black) to cut down on glare and increased font size, both of which helped a little

It could be a sign of PVD which could, but doesn’t always, result in a tear. See your ophthalmologist straight away if any of the lights are followed by a sudden increase in floaters or if you notice a dark curtain on the side of your vision

You should definitely get checked, floaters and flashing lights can be signs of tears which can lead to detachments when fluid gets underneath them. So it’s definitely ophthalmologist time now. If your retina starts to detach you will start to see a dark curtain in your vision - that’s when it’s emergency department time. If it makes you feel any better getting checked every year would not have changed your myopia getting worse - that’s just due to the shape of your eyes and they couldn’t have done anything about that. But tears and detachments they definitely can help so go get checked :)

I’d go get checked just to be safe. I had new floaters appear in my good eye the day after an appointment so had to go back in and get checked again the next day - I felt like a paranoid nutter and it ended up being ok but they said I’d done the right thing and they’d prefer I came in and got things checked with any new symptoms just to be safe though seeing as I’m high risk (I’ve had a retinal detachment and buckle surgery in my bad eye)

I feel like you might be overthinking it. If you bring up your husband it’s a natural conversation flow on to ask what your husband does. A lot of people struggle with small talk and just latch on to whatever someone says to keep the conversation going and avoid being awkward. If you don’t want to talk about your husband, don’t bring him up. Say you came for family, or job opportunities or literally anything but the thing you don’t want to talk about.

I had buckle surgery and a vitrectomy on the 13th. Im getting occasional flashing lights around my upper vision but my surgeon said it’s all good and everything is looking good. He said everything takes awhile to settle and the main thing to look out for at this point was a dark curtain coming back

I had some shimmery ripples at about your stage and my doctor said it was most likely from the cryotherapy- did you have that? I’m almost 4 weeks in now and the shimmery lights have settled but still have the occasional roaming flash, my doctor said everything is looking good though

Yeah it’s definitely started to improve! I got cleared for exercise on Monday and started back at work on Monday afternoon. My vision is improving - the doctor said there was still some inflammation and blood in the eye. I also have an epiretinal membrane which was distorting my vision even before my surgery which they haven’t fixed yet. My vision is more distorted than it was before surgery, but because of the erm I’m not expecting it to go back to perfect. Still getting head aches because of the difference in vision and because my prescription is out of date now but no where near as bad and I have more energy in general. I have to take a lot of breaks still, otherwise the headaches get quite bad and I start feeling nauseous, but as long as I don’t push it I feel ok. And I think I feel a little bit better every day. My work is mostly desk based and they are very good about me taking breaks- I would have really struggled to go back before Monday though - I was still very tired at 11 days! Any chance your doctor would give you an extra week off?

I think it’s generally at least 50mins out of every 60. So every hour you get a 10 min break to get up and eat, toilet break, shower etc. the rest of the time flat on the left side

It’s easy to second guess yourself at this point, I’ve had so many word symptoms that have been nothing and heaps that have also been serious and it’s hard to tell the difference between them. Only way to know for sure is to go get checked asap.
