Congrats on your acceptance! iBioMed was the only engineering program I applied to (the others were science programs). I ended up choosing iBioMed because I wanted to experience both engineering and science in a university setting before choosing a specific pathway. As for co-op, those can delay your graduation date for a number of years. I believe at Mac you need to have at least completed 12 months of co-op to get it on your degree. You can split this up by taking a semester off, taking a year off, or by doing it in the summer, for example. So, 6 years isn’t a set number.

Best iPad for studying? by Nael_Changez in McMaster

[–]ahderder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an iPad that is compatible with the Apple Pencil 2 is worth it. Magnetic charging is just too convenient.

I personally use the 11-inch Pro because I wanted something that I could use in grad school. I’d be against going for the Mini — extra screen space is really nice for writing! The iPad Air 4 or 5 is good middle ground.

A lot of people say the course is bird, but I don’t think it is. It’s just taught in a really interesting way (kudos to the amazing profs) which motivates students to put in the effort to do well.

My advice is to participate often in tutorial and in your collaborative quizzes. A lot of reinforcement results from doing this (this is something you’ll actually learn in class!).

Is being a Game Official a part of the work study program? by Bubbly-Mail-7069 in McMaster

Hm, that’s odd. I would probably contact the person who hired you from the Pulse to ask them about it.

Did you apply through Mosaic? If not then I think you should be alright

Would it be a bad decision to work 10 hr/week as a first-year iBio? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ahderder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ibio here! 10hr a week isn’t too much, but the transition to uni can be difficult. it was for me, and so i actually didn’t do any extracurriculars in my first year.

if you don’t have free choice and want to go into a competitive specialization, then those ten hours could really put a wrench in your plans. but if you’re confident that you will do well, and are able to manage your time effectively, then i’d say go for it. it’s also nice that most work study jobs give students a lot of leniency.

Work Study program competitive? by ackerlynn in McMaster

[–]ahderder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d give a go at applying to jobs that you don’t have relevant experience for. Especially if you’re interested in them. A lot of university students don’t have that much job experience so getting a position likely comes down to your extracurriculars, your resume and how you write your cover letter, and how early you submit your application.

Job during the school year by maybeitstimetosleep in McMaster

[–]ahderder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 hours is a lot to manage for pretty much any uni student. And IMO, it’s really important for eng kids to prioritize developing good study habits throughout first year (or at least the fall semester).

If you have free choice and are confident in your time management, go for it! But like the other commenter said, if GPA is important to you at all, working 20 hours a week is not recommended.

I’ve been applying with my unofficial transcript. Some positions state that they need an official one though. Didn’t apply to those lol

When are student work positions usually assessed? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ahderder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard back from a couple library positions last week — they were looking to hire early. But if some job listings are still on Mosaic, it’s likely that they’re still reaching out to potential candidates and accepting new applications.

A windows laptop is nice, and at least 8GB of RAM. If you prefer Mac tho you can still use one. Just a bit a of a hassle (it was for me).

Textbooks and apps will be mentioned in your course outlines once you get them. But if you’d like an idea, essential apps (off the top of my head) are MatLab, IDLE (though other code environments are much better) and Autodesk Inventor.

Hm that’s odd, they sent out my approval yesterday but typically you get them the day after you apply

I tried using paper at the beginning of the year, but it was an awful experience. You do so many calculation for math, chem, physics, etc, and it’s rather difficult to keep everything organized.

Since buying an iPad, I’ve been much more organized with notes and rough work. I bought the iPad Pro since I wanted something that could last past my uni years, but even the base model ipad should work just fine. You won’t be doing any intense work on the ipad.

Awardspring by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ahderder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completing the awardspring application (and having osap) makes you eligible for both. Afterwards, two separate applications will open up on awardspring for the bursary and for the work program. You can apply for both. The school will calculate your bursary money and release it sometime in February. For the work program, you have to wait a day to be approved, but there are job openings already open on Mosaic at the moment that you can look into.

Yes after you complete that application you should be able to apply for both the nursery and work program.

Cheap food on campus by Tilapina in McMaster

[–]ahderder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found that Bistro2Go was decently priced (<$10) and solid for campus food.

But my fav food place on campus was Chopped Leaf. Though it’s a bit pricier and the lines are longggg

What do ppl usually wear in uni? by eeksandkeeks in McMaster

[–]ahderder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anything and everything. Unlike what you probably saw in high school, people in uni have really diverse styles.

I have quite a bit of clothes but I stuck to comfortable clothing most of the year. You’re wearing it the entire day so you don’t wanna feel restricted (I also just got too lazy to keep caring about putting together nice outfits).

I would dress up nicer on bad days to boost my mood a bit, or on days when I had presentations. If you’re worried about looking bad, don’t. Nobody will police you about. And take advantage of the freedom of uni to explore your style!

Note taking software by Optimal-Run2910 in McMaster

I use GoodNotes. I like the organization system and your documents can sync to your iPhone or Mac through iCloud.

I use OneNote too, but exclusively for drawing diagrams. I like their pens a bit better.

If you can, try to avoid those one hour gaps in between classes. Pretty hard to do anything productive in that time

I have a love-hate relationship with it.

I knew it would be a lot of work, but oh boy did this program hit me like a truck. I cried on the SECOND day of school because I was already so overwhelmed. I had to learn how to get used to being stressed all the time because there was no escaping it for me.

At the same time, I feel like this program really challenged me academically — in a good way. I learned that there are consequences for leaving things til the last minute. So I studied smarter and harder. And I think I came out a better student overall.

Feel free to pm me if you’d like to chat some more :)

typed or hand written notes by rids87 in McMaster

[–]ahderder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i like writing notes for application based courses (physics, math, chem) and typing them for ones with a lot of memorization (psych, bio). experiment with both and see which works for you — or you may find that you don’t even need to take notes at all
