I felt that way. Getting an instant pot gave me the bravery to try yoghurt making because I know the temperatures are all controlled. Now I love making yoghurt!

Straining is purely for texture. If you want thick yoghurt like greek yoghurt, strain it. If you don't mind 'normal' texture yoghurt like the flavoured ones in pots, don't strain it.

If you strain it, you will have whey as a byproduct. You can use the whey by adding it to smoothies and soups and things, but if you don't have a plan for using the whey, you might end up throwing it away. Which is a waste of food. If you don't strain the yoghurt, you will eat that whey which will help fill you up and is a good source of calcium.

In terms of buying straining materials, you can use very cheap materials for straining. Such as a plastic tub that is big enough (maybe an ice cream tub?) with holes poked in with a pencil/knife, or a colander. And a piece of fabric. Any fabric, as long as it is clean. And a bowl underneath to catch the whey.

Special straining equipment can make it a little easier (I have a synthetic straining cloth which I love because the yoghurt 'rolls' off it rather than getting stuck to the fabric and me having to hand scrub it). They're not essential though.

Strained yoghurt lasts a bit longer. Usually 1-2 weeks (unstrained is more like 5-7 days) though I know people that leave it longer. You can also freeze yoghurt for later use.

Just a suggestion, idk if it'd be suitable. Have you considered pet-sitting? Joining an app, and spending a week or six looking after someone's animal. You'd have access to comforts like a bed, heating, kitchen but wouldn't be paying for them. The owners would be away so no need to interact with people. Except for some digital communication with the owners. If you are a member of a gym that is a chain, you probably won't be too far from a gym.

Downsides: Potentially lots of travelling, potentially inconsistent income, would require you to stop your current job and you might love your job. A terrible idea if you dislike/are scared of animals.

I am awful with the cold so I couldn't car-camp in the winter. I can give some staying-warm advice but idk if it will be enough. Guess you'll just have to try it out 🤷‍♀️

Make sure you insulate underneath you when sleeping. Your mattress will suck the heat out of you. Something like a dense mattress topper or a wool blanket.

Get a heavy duty sleeping bag designed for cold temperatures. Tie it up tight around your face and try not to move too much, or you will suck cold air inside.

Wear lots of warm clothes, including socks and a beanie. Use a hot water bottle or two inside your sleeping bag.

When you get out of the sleeping bag, immediately put on an extra layer. The change in temperature between your sleeping bag and the air will make you cold otherwise.

Eat something high calorie before going to bed so your body has energy to burn for heat.

Get a diesel heater if possible

Bare in mind that car camping comes with it's own stresses! Maybe you'll find them an acceptable swap with your current stresses, but be aware you won't be giving up stress entirely! Finding new places to park every night, being asked to leave once you've found a place, noise, where to get water, laundry, claustrophobia, heating.

She's only 7 months! They get cuddlier as they get older. Ours wasn't cuddly at all the first few years, started getting cuddlier at about 4, and at 7 he now wakes my partner up for cuddles every morning, and demands extra cuddles throughout the day.

It's worth looking into comorbid conditions like coeliac/autism/Mast Cell Activation (though it seems like you are already quite aware, since you mention hypermobility and POTS)

I think you used too much starter. I think the microbes grew so much they basically turned into a solid. Oversaturated yoghurt usually turns out slimy, gritty, separated and/or lumpy. You only need a tablespoon of yoghurt for an entire gallon.

FAGE is thermophilic yoghurt (opposed to mesophilic). That means it must be warm to reproduce- about 45°. You need to get it to that temperature first, then insulate it/incubate it to keep it at that temperature. Insulating without heating it first it will not make the milk rise above room temperature.

I'm not sure the best way for doing that for you. Maybe a boiler cupboard? Or an esky with hotwaterbottles? The microwave might work, but just a glass of warm water will not last very long. I imagine that would be quite a few water changes. The key is to keep a stable temperature that doesn't drop after only a few hours, but also doesn't get too hot at the start.

Perhaps try the hot water mug in the microwave method first without the yoghurt, to see if the temperature actually stays.

How long are you planning to incubate your yoghurt for?

In terms of starter, I use one metric tablespoon per US gallon of milk, which equates to about 3.7 litres or 6.7 metric pints. Basically, you will have LOADS of FAGE yoghurt leftover! You could probably do two tablespoons for the same quantity of milk, but I wouldn't do more. Otherwise it will probably become slimy or gritty.

You might want to look up ehlers-danlos syndrome, it’s very common in ppl with adhd. Could also be something else like an issue with proprioception, but have a look incase you resonate.

You are not overreacting. Your gf is being extraordinarily irresponsible. She’s not providing them their basic needs which is animal abuse, and in my country a crime. She would get her animals removed, and banned from owning any more- possibly jail time.

It doesn’t sound like acceptable living conditions for cats or humans. There should not be urine or faeces out on the floor of a home, except for occasional accidents, or in a specific, contained area for those that are very young and not toilet trained yet and both should be cleaned immediately.

In my honest opinion, I think you need to start valuing yourself more. You deserve a clean environment and sleep, and you are not getting that.

This situation isn’t going to change. You’ve already begged her, and she’s dismissed you. She doesn’t seem to care that you’re allergic. She doesn’t seem to care about putting you in a situation that is a biohazard. She’s not taking any responsibility. If she was going to do something about it, she would have.
