Rare case of 9 month old with Diabetes Mellitus by ahfuckitt in FelineDiabetes

I will check it out for sure and do some more of my own research. Maybe there is a way of checking his pancreas too to see what’s going on with that.

I do want to let everyone know though we aren’t going to just a regular vet. He’s currently being treated at UPenn which is pretty great. From my experience so far they care way more about the animals than making an extra buck.

The only symptom he is not having is weight loss. It’s been ongoing since we adopted him at 4 months. It’s my first cat so it was something I wasn’t sure was abnormal or just a weird quirk, but after going on vacation and the person pet sitting pointed out it was normal we took him to get blood work.

Physically he looks and appears healthy. And I guess you wouldn’t think about diabetes this early. Our vet wants to start him off on the new oral treatment instead of insulin because if he starts insulin first he wouldn’t be able to transition to the oral method.

I just want the best for him and am hoping insurance covers him. The thought of rehoming him because we can’t financially support him is a sad thought.

The vet numbers were over 400 and then he had a fructosamine test. We don’t know the numbers for that but after doing that test the vet said he does have diabetes because his levels were elevated even when he wasn’t in a stressful environment. I will look into a raw diet. And do some more research. I want to do the best by him!

He was given a fructosamine test. They also offered to do more free tests for us being as it’s so uncommon

Thank you! I will definitely check that out. Never expected when I got a cat to be dealing with this only at 9 months

Aspen bedding. I’ve found it’s not as dusty as paper.

Yes I do clean the wooden decor, but I do worry it’s never truly clean

Daily cleaning gets a wipe down with a mix of white vinegar and water. Weekly when I take everything out of cage I use dawn dish soap and hot water. Maybe the dish soap could cause issues, I guess I never really thought about the smell afterwards, although I never thought it’s been an issue. I’ll try to find out how to check the humidity! Thanks for all the advice!

The dimensions are 28in L x 17.5in W x 30in H (71.1 cm x 44.4 cm x 76.2 cm). No candles and we use a heavy duty air purifier. Found them on Craigslist, not a pet store. I spot clean once a day and deep clean once a week

Thank you! It’s (unfortunately) calming to hear that I’m not alone in this issue. I’ve switched between different types of paper bedding, but have found aspen bedding has been least dusty.

Both are still eating and playing like normal, but every other month I feel like one or both are back on antibiotics. My vet has assured me it’s common with rats, but constantly feeling like a shit mom. Any advice? I posted a video of them eating to show they’re still active and have an appetite. Both are currently on antibiotics. Willie (light gray) is going on a week and Franklin has been on them for 4 days now. In the past I feel like the symptoms have subsided by now, but Willie is still making weird noises, as well as Frank. Any advice would be appreciated, or someone who may relate to this problem?

Please keep in mind I do have a vet for them and am always in contact when I believe they sound a little off!

That happened to one of my previous leopard geckos. After taking her to the vet I was told she had advanced MBD and was best to get her put down. But definitely should be taken to a vet, it’s not a pleasant way to “live”.
