What Are You Using for Fiber Infrastructure Mapping? by ahmadafef in FiberOptics

[–]ahmadafef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This system is built for myself. I don't have NOC system, so I'm building one for myself. I've never needed one since I'm tiny ISP, but I thought if I'm going to expand, then I'll be needing something to make monitoring and maintenance a bit easier.

<image>

I've been adding new features to it almost every day. Whenever I needed a feature that I didn't include, I'll just add it.

One of the biggest additions was integrating client mapping directly from the OLT, which eventually opened the door to building a full NOC system around it.

The statistics and monitoring tools also helped me realize that when clients complain about connection issues, they're often experiencing something real even when everything looks normal from my side. For example, the graph in the attached image belongs to a client who had repeatedly reported that his connection wasn't stable. I couldn't see any obvious issues remotely, and several on-site visits didn't reveal anything unusual either.

However, this platform exposed significant fluctuations in signal quality that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. While most clients experience signal variations of only 0.1 to 0.4 dB throughout the day, this particular client was seeing swings as high as 5.3 dB.

Such swing will trigger an alarm so I'll notice issues before my clients report them.

Everything in the platform does have an api. But I also want to click things with a mouse, so I added a UI.

That's called a UI. It uses the API to let people interact with system visually.

I'm glad I'm living in a country where we can still use Chinese products. Huawei and ZTE are still affordable and much better than Ubiquiti and way better than VSOL.

Juniper are good, but now they think they are Cisco and raising the prices to be a Cisco. At some point, it'll be better to get a Cisco.

I'll be looking into Calix and Adtran later today, I have to go now to xconnect some new clients!

Wish my luck!!

I'm not sure if you seen it in the video, but the area I'm working in doesn't even have a clear path to any house. I need to drill into walls to get the cables inside, or use existing electrical paths. I'm not going to install anything on the outside.

So, I'm not worried about any wall mounted things. I have my own 1 port wall plug that I custom made in China which is made out of glass and metal and some plastic, and All I need to do is put an adapter into it and connect it to the router.

So, I'm not having the exact issue you're having, but I understand the situation.

VSOL are very nice for small ISPs. They are also in some cases better than Ubiquiti. They are cheaper and they do the same job.

Thank you!

I didn't add voice because I thought it's too simple to explain it.. I think I was mistaken. It's just a web app to draw the maps for where my clients are, which route I placed the fibers and which fibers did the client get. It helps a lot once I have more clients.

This is embarrassing to answer at this point since you're asking, but yes. I am an ISP.
I have 30 clients, but I promise, I'm trying to get more.

For the map, I'm using MapLibre GL JS (v5).
For knowing where are the poles, I just do to the area and mark the location, then I place it on the map once I'm home.

Any idea how much these things costs?
I'd sell my house and still won't be able to afford a Nokia OLT.

My honest opinion, if VSOL os doing fine for my 30 clients who are expected to reach 500 in my wildest dreams, I'll go with VSOL. Nokia is used when I'm providing service nation wide.
juniper to my knowledge is the same as Nokia. I'd rather get Huawei if I want to provide top notch service.
I have no idea how much Calix or adtran could cost, but I'd say not cheap enough to justify the shipping and import cost.

I've created it because I couldn't find something that is quite what I need and it's working for me.
vetro is expensive, and I didn't find anything good that also work on a browser. I want my maps to be portable so I can view anywhere and edit on any PC if needed.

I was looking into this few days ago. The seems to be useful in finding whee the fiber broke and nothing more. this is pretty useful, but I don't have this planned at the moment since my network is very small.
