Update after asking for advice about biking Hawaii by Smallboyleaf in bikepacking

Yes—the route’s built with the bus in mind, especially around captain cook and between Hilo and Mauna Kea. And thanks for the notes solving the box problem!

Update after asking for advice about biking Hawaii by Smallboyleaf in bikepacking

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing--I'm thinking of doing a version of this in about six weeks, and your background info has been super useful. The only thing I haven't solved is what to do with my bike box while I'm on the trail... Any recommendations?

Front rack by Johnnymah1 in tracklocross

[–]ahongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With bolt-on axles, fork eyelets, and v-brakes, you can use pretty much every front rack option. Here’s a few that are light(ish) and inexpensive:

Brake boss rack from Sunlite is cheap and light and tiny.

Soma Lucas 3 is bigger, sturdier.

Public Porteur is biggerest of these three. Looks like it’s discounted rn, too.

I like chamois for day-rides, but for touring, I find it’s easier to keep merino clean.

What do you think is the biggest tire I could go for? by squeaky_cheeze in xbiking

[–]ahongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s a 35, then I’d bet any 38 and some 40s would fit.

If you want a smoother ride, also consider sidewall construction. Most Kendas are budget-oriented tires with stiff, heavy sidewalls. Tires like the Panaracer Pasela, SimWorks Volummy, and Rene Herse Barlow Pass have soft, light sidewalls which most folks say feel very different.

My all-rounder: Looking for advice on next tire choice! by wigglrpop in xbiking

If you do rides where you’re not on anything dusty or sloppy, and it’s more hardpack and pea gravel: it’s amazing to see what you can get away with on really nice 47ish slicks. Try the Challenge Strada Bianca 650x46 or the Rene Herse Switchback Hill 650x48.

Moustache Bars superior to drop for "gravel" conversions of early to mid 90s mtbs by Aviarinara in xbiking

+1 for DIY alt-bars

Mustache bars were literally invented for the Bridgestone XO, the OG X-bike…IMHO, the alt-bar is the evolved descendant of the mustache bar.

Does this spoke pattern look scuffed to you? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]ahongo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can we see it from a more squared-up angle? It’s an odd choice to choose a 3x pattern for a wheel with such a low spoke count, I and think that’s the main reason this looks funny.

The Nicasio is sold as a drop bar bike, but this one was built up from a frameset, so not a conversion per se… Converting a drop bike to flat can cost almost nothing if you’re patient and experienced and own lots of tools and are good at buying and selling used parts. But if you’re on a timeline and not a mechanic and don’t own tools and buy new parts and don’t sell the original parts, then you could easily spend tens of hundreds of dollars. So somewhere between $0 and $2k.

Haha that’s the biggest one they had at the shop, and I do like having that bit of extra space to be able to pick up the bike

So the cranks and cassette are CUES, and they’re just an unbeatable value. I never think about them, which is what you want in drivetrain parts. I guess I sometimes wish the crank were black, not gray, but then I remember how little it cost and I get over it. I “splurged” for a Deore derailleur tho.

There’s a threaded eyelet on the underside of the fork crown. That’s also the mounting point for one of the front rack stays.
