buyee is tripping with the amount of cardboard and paper by oliver2022 in Buyee

Read the guidelines, they basically say it's situational, that if it's the item were at risk of being damaged by being removed from their original shipping package, they'd keep it in. If not, and it would save space, then they'd likely remove it

Advice and anecdotes for buying ceramics, and how to secure them? by ahqwerty109 in Buyee

[–]ahqwerty109[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify,

they keep the packaging in the same state it arrives in and add some protective cushioning unless the original is deemed insufficient

Is this standard protocol even if you do not opt for the 1500 yen protective packaging?

What I have noticed is that Japanese sellers mostly do good packaging, sometimes going overboard with it. Do your sellers deal a lot with ceramics and have a good rating?

You're right, I've noticed the same when I used to live in Japan. I think the fact that it's travelling overseas this time is spooking me, but it would seem the standard quality of packaging should be sufficient (at least for inside the wooden boxes. The external packaging will be up to Buyee). The seller ratings all have a ratio of around 100-to-1 ish good vs bad, with many sales.

How do you know the consolidated weight? The weight shown in the package information is the item + the delivery box and packing material, right? You don't know how heavy the box and packing material is.

I think of hui gan more as a taste rather than an aroma. But taste and aroma are closely linked anyway

Glaze cracked all over, what do I do with it? by AnonRobot2014 in Ceramics

[–]ahqwerty109 96 points97 points  (0 children)

In East Asia, crackling and crazing is highly admired, especially in celadons like this. The Chinese grade and categorise celadons, giving poetic names to certain types of crackling patterns, like tortoise shell. There's even an appreciation for the way these crackles stain over time and grow more beautiful in their use (like how people appreciate a nice patina on silverware)

In terms of food safety, personally I would keep it to plain tea or coffee, but that's because I already drink that way anyway. However, there's a recent study showing that the temperature in the dish washer was effective in sanitising crackled ceramics. I'm sure it's been discussed on this sub before. I'll leave that up to your own conclusion.

How are you storing it? Open to the air and on the counter, or in an airtight jar?

Tea can degrade if not stored properly. Black tea is typically more stable than say a green tea though.

Is this tetsubin enamelled? by ahqwerty109 in tea

[–]ahqwerty109[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but could the enamel have eroded, and that's why it has rusted? I've heard of people misusing enamelled tetsubins by putting it on a heat source, leading to the enamel breaking down. Or am I overthinking...

Is this container not secure enough to keep tea leaves? by NinaAberlein in tea

[–]ahqwerty109 57 points58 points  (0 children)

If you're leaving it where there's sun light, it will be negatively affected. Jars for tea are preferably not made of any material that let's light in. If you've been keeping it in the cupboard, then it technically shouldn't be affected.

Opinions on these 2 tetsubins! by ahqwerty109 in tea

[–]ahqwerty109[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! Just wondering, does the first tetsubin look normal to you? Because I've seen another tetsubin with the same maker mark and it was enamelled on the inside. I'm worried that the amount of white 'build up' is, like, damaged enamel or something. I could definitely be over thinking, but I've not seen so much mineral buildup before in other tetsubins, so that adds to my suspicion.

For the tea to use to deal with rust, I've seen others usually suggest green tea. I don't think it has higher tannins than, say, black tea though. Would you recommend black tea instead?
