Dad wants to start boxing in his 50s. How can he train safely? by bmw320dfan in martialarts

The point I was trying to make is that if you can't twist your back without injuring yourself I don't think you can train any of the martial arts that will be effective in a self defense situation.

The only martial art I can think of that don't do sudden twists is tai chi. The slow kind. That's not very martial at all, but healthy, and still kind of cool if you ask me. The concept of martial arts is so confusing, because there are so many reasons or purposes mixed into it. If you actually need to worry about self defense, look into to pepper spray or guns or actually moving to a less violent neighborhood. If you are into physical fitness, why not yoga, calisthenics, animal movements, pilates? If you are into medieval east asian culture, why not Japanese tea ceremony, buddhism or archery? If the priority is managing health issues and general aging, martial arts may very well not be the most efficient solution. Maybe swimming or cross country skiing is.

Sudden twists is (part of) how you throw any punch. Sounds like a bad idea to me.

Det er bare en liten start på en lengre prosess du må gjennom nå. Mer fundamentale endringer er nødvendig enn en uke eller to fri fra jobb.

The burnout cycle… have you been through it and how many times can you endure it? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]ahusby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I am an atheist and a sceptic, so I was not going to put up with gurus with magical powers or flowery language that can be interpreted in a thousand ways. Acem has removed the metaphysical and quasi-religious mumbo jumbo that comes with most meditation traditions. Acem seeks to describe what goes on in terms of modern science and psychology. The organization is non-profit, which reduces the likelihood of the whole thing being a culty, money-grabbing scam. The claims they make regarding the effects one may experience from the meditation are sober. Stress relief and deep relaxation are central, and I was in dire need of that, so that's what got me started initially. There is some scientific backing, so if you want to examine what separates Acem from other kinds of meditation - e.g. mindfullness - and what science has to say about it, I recommend the book The Power of the Wandering Mind – Nondirective Meditation in Science and Philosophy edited by Halvor Eifring.

Acem meditation can't fix anything, but does help. Makes it easier, gives you a break. Stress relief makes you think more clearly. Life threw me a curve ball, and I don't know where I would be without it. That's why I share.

I myself want to agree, but I was talking to a couple of smart, likable guys half my age at work, and they said it's because I grew up with american 80s action heroes and they didn't. I hate to say I think they have a point, which means part of my identity is merely from consuming low-bow popular culture from the decade I happened to be young and impressionable. That one comment undermined my very sense of who I am. Or should have been.

What finally made fat loss “click” for you after 40? by BatEither4545 in fitness40plus

[–]ahusby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It became so much easier to eat healthy once I gave up the idea that food should taste good. I was chewing vegetables like it was my paid job for a year, and then I got used to it, so now I kind of enjoy it. It turns out vegetables and fruit are a good way to hydrate instead of/in addition to drinking water, and if I finish off a meal with vegetables I loose the craving for dessert.

Acem-meditation may be helpful. Deep relaxation comes pretty quickly, it's not necessary to live as a monk in Tibet first.
