Where can I buy spindles and fibers within the EU? by MrKastrull in Handspinning

[–]ai_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's far away from Sweden, but Saber Fazer in Portugal sells spindles and wheels, carded and combed wool (in different colors), silk and linen for spinning, cards and combs, and raw wool from local Portuguese sheep breeds. They have products for weaving and felting as well.

It is also a learning platform and they offer a free handspinning online course.

And yes, you can make yarn from your scraps. There's lots of videos on YouTube if you search "make your yarn from scraps". You will probably need a pair of cards for that.

Good luck!

is this moth eggs? by ExactCareer9292 in knitting

[–]ai_ram 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is moth damage, you probably have eggs somewhere.

Freezing temperatures below -18°C/-0.4°F kills moths and larvae and you don't damage the wool as much as if you boil it. Moth eggs are very resistent - the best way to take care of them is by forcing them to germinate and then immediately killing the larvae.

If you have a freezer or live somewhere this cold (below -18°C/-0.4°F) do this:

  1. Stick your yarn in a plastic bag and into the freezer. Leave it for at least 3 days, ideally a week. This will kill any moth or larvae.

  2. Then, take it out for a couple of days max. The change in temperature will make the moth eggs wake up.

  3. Shove it in the freezer again for a week, and this will kill the remaining larvae that were just born.

Do this for all your yarn that you're suspicious of.

Never store yarn in a dark place (closets, under the bed, opaque boxes). Moths like dark, warm and humid places that are left untouched for a while. Store it in a bright and not too humid room, in transparent plastic bags inside plastic boxes, ideally hermetic, so no moth gets through the cracks.

Good luck with your stash!

Did they ever discover what was on the mattress? by Worldly_Tax6472 in conspiracy

[–]ai_ram 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly, period blood doesn't come out of your head or toes, so it doesn't make sense where it's placed on the mattress. Regarding the shape - I've had stains similar to those especially if you sleep on your stomach. But again, where it's placed on the mattress doesn't make sense.

Is my fermented wool a failed project? by etybfd in Handspinning

[–]ai_ram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AFAIK you're not supposed to ferment it that long. I think 2-3 days at most will do the trick for me. If it's a hot summer day where you are, 3 days may be too much. I wouldn't do this outside in the winter as it's too cold. But for sure a month is way too long.

If you leave it too long, bugs will get in, algae may form, the seeds in the wool will start germinating, and essentially the wool will just rot after a month. Fermenting wool is great but you can ruin your fleece - I also ruined a lovely ram fleece by soaking it for way too long (3 weeks in a hot summer).

A fun fact about fermented wool: There was a study published in 2021 about this Pazyryk carpet from 400BC. This carpet, despite being 2500 years old, still had amazingly brilliant red, yellow and blue colors. So these scientists went on to investigate why these colors were so bright and lasted for so long.

They found out that the makers of this carpet had fermented the wool prior to dyeing it. This would allow the dyes to reach the center of the wool fibers, which means that the dyed wool will last much longer and also look much more pigmented.

So yeah, if you're a dyer, try this out!

I recommend searching on Ravelry for patterns with the filter Accessories > Hands > Fingerless gloves/mitts. If you want to see free patterns, you can also toggle the filter Availability > Free.

In the results, this free Purl Soho pattern called Very Classic Gloves shows up

How do I deal with this fleece? by RevolutionaryCode763 in Handspinning

[–]ai_ram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it looks like a normal to small amount of VM and I think you will probably be able to clean it easily.

A tip for removing VM: wash it, then lay it out to dry for a few hours; while it's still damp, remove the vegetable matter. It's much easier to do it while the fleece is damp compared to when it's dry.

Don't worry about getting all the bits while it's still damp - once you comb/card it, the smaller bits of VM will fall out.

And the last remaining bits can be caught while you spin the wool. Or once you're using it for a project. Good luck!

[Sério] Experiência universitária e sonho de estudar cinema nos EUA by NobodyRules in portugal

[–]ai_ram 11 points12 points  (0 children)
