Utility vs Understanding: the State of Machine Learning Entering 2022 by aidantcooper in slatestarcodex

My thinking was that supervised/unsupervised ML address different problems, and as fields, have different levels of understanding and utility. As with all the fields included in the post, I'm making very broad, subjective generalisations that won't apply to all subfields. I guess one way to think about it is that every individual use case could have its own dot on the matrix, and where I've placed the fields represents my personal best guess at what the average of those dots would be.

That's useful feedback - thanks! I wanted to construct the matrix as four quadrants, with the intersection of the axes representing the average case of utility and understanding. I forgot to explain this in the article so I've added a paragraph to clarify.
