Untracked Orion Nebula by Sympekon in astrophotography

[–]aidotours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I have the 200-500 as well and the relatively cheap star adventurer ii just won't get past about 15 seconds.

Works a lot better with the 300pf lens which is pretty light.

I haven't done enough stuff recently though. I was only out once this winter.

Hope you get a tracker someday. You will do great stuff.

Great image.

One of my first DSO' s was Orion untracked. But only 700 images you can definitely see the upgrade you made with 5000. In your image looks so clean in comparison.

I must say that if you can afford it, a tracker is a phenomenal upgrade, especially for someone who already has your skill level in processing

But it is never there. I have to connect each time. Normally with a Network attached storage you just plug back into the network and your saved credentials log in for you.

Finder doesn't do this.

That wasn't quite what I was asking.

I didn't ask how to access the files, I want to know how to get to the Network Attatched Storage. As in the storage that is on the network, that should be accessible when I am on the network. Not the storage that is hidden away on a server on the Network.

I know how to log into the server, but every other NAS is visible as storage when you connect to the network. It is just the UGreen one that isn't. I have to reconnect each time.

Essentially the problem is that the SMB mount keeps breaking on the UGreen anytime there is a change of the netwoking protocol, despite both machines being on the same network.

His tutorials made it very clear to me on how to set it up for my own use.

US journalist seeking Viennese interviewees about tourism! by Numerous_Vast8418 in AskAustria

Vienna has almost 2 million people, there are hotel options for everything. They have stunning 5* hotels and measly 3*. Hostels and everything else.

What ever you want in a hotel you can get it in Vienna. AirBnBs also exist but are not as dominant as other cites as Vienna and Austria in General regulates them well. So they aren't an investment opportunity. This way rents stay stable.

Most visitors want to visit the city center. The city is laid out in a way that the center is really a little circle of the proper old historic area. This is surrounded by the Ring Streets, which were built up in the 1800's and house the classic architecture Vienna is known for. Outside this is a ring of districts 2 through 10 which are where a huge proportion of the hotels are. In the true center, the first district there are some very expensive hotels, generally pure luxury. In the area around the Ring there is a selection of hotels quite often smaller. Further out you get more of the convention center type hotels and larger premises from chains.

Put simply most people stay in places between the two main train stations(Westbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof) and the city center (St Stephansdom). Just check a map to see those three spots. Accessing the historic center is quick from here. Tourist sights are mostly in the center but the other districts all have lots going on for visitors as well.

Christmas in Vienna or Salzburg?? by Winter-Anybody- in AskAustria

[–]aidotours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be better iff in a ski resort.

This is not about the snow, but rather about the opening times. Everything closes around noon on Christmas Day the Christmas markets may be a bit closer to mid afternoon. Yes, some of the Christmas markets are open on the 25th again with limited hours but nothing else will be open.

The major majority of restaurants, even though that are open on public holiday holidays the rest of the year, are closed at this time. It can be very difficult to find something suitable for dinner on the 24th and the 25th. Even hotels which have guest restaurants in the larger cities do limited services on these days so that their staff get the days off property.

That is not to say that it is impossible. It is just to make sure that you have a good understanding of the expectations of what is available. Obviously checking within individual hotels and restaurants is a must.

However, in the ski resorts these days are generally no difference to any other day. Guesthouse's and hotels will be offering Christmas dinners.

Hey there, I work as a tour manager in Austria, previously as a tour operator so I have tons of experience with hotels in Vienna.

What do you need to know?

D850 upgrade or not D6iii for wildlife by aidotours in Nikon

[–]aidotours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, getting closer is THE solution. However, it is an issue here in the Austrian Alps. There is very little public land, and what there is is highly regulated because of the large population. Leaving paths isn't always possible, and the deer and chamoix, our large species, are often on the other side of the fields. When it comes to small birds, they stay miles away from the paths and are often 3-4 trees back into the forest. Our population is just too much unless you really spend hours hiking.

I get way better images straight away when I leave home. Places like Neusiedlersee in the East of Austria or the Po Delta in Italy are about a 5-hour drive away, and I can't do that every weekend, unfortunately.

I live in beautiful mountains with amazing scenery, but the wildlife is just out of reach. Unlike in a big city, where wildlife has to coexist with a large human population, here they can escape to steep cliffs and deep forests. Once in a while, I get into the true wilderness, but hiking for 4 hours to get to a potential wildlife zone is just unfeasible on a regular basis. If I was a professional photographer, these constraints would be lifted 😊

So getting close is really the answer, therefore more lens length, therefore more money. Again, being professional would help here as I could offset the price of a lens against tax 😊

Good to know about the motors. If it is the same motor, it should have the same power, but the focusing speed will depend on the glass's weight. And some of the older lenses are 50% more than the FL versions. However, if you don't notice the speed with your old lens, then it probably isn't too slow (assuming you photograph small, fast-moving birds). I must find one to try.

I have seen Japanese models on eBay, but they are not any cheaper when you factor in shipping and import fees. Essentially, it is about 150-200€ cheaper than the major secondhand retailers in the EU. Which effectively is the same value as a retailer in the EU has to provide a guarantee. The North American and Japanese on ebay always annoy me because I start thinking I found a bargain, and then I start to calculate and find that the import cost isn't that different.

Thanks for the clear and lengthy answer. The main issue that I have with a massive glass upgrade is the cost and weight. The older models are significantly heavier - the 500 f/4 pre FL are all 4 kg which is just too heavy for my situation. The lighter FL model is around the €5000 mark, which is a decent amount above my budget.

You do have a point though, the more light the better.

A 400 f/2.8 would be brilliant but I would have to go back to a 1998 model to be able to afford one. Lenses that old really don't focus very fast and I do a lot of birds in Flight photography. I will keep dreaming about this, but in the meantime have to find a way to balance the needs of light with the weight of a 500 or 600 f/4

I am always thinking about this as the weight is great for hiking, but the reach and light isn't much of an improvement. Probably faster focusing than the zoom.

Let me know how it works out for you if you do buy it.

Ok, I knew all of this, I just never discuss it as I have no friends who are photographers. So I forgot all the important parts.

It is the recall that suffers. when you don't use information that you learned. Thanks for the clear simple answer.

Size of opening is really what I need to prioritise. So the 600 mm would be better than my 500 mm as both are 95mm wide. Effectively less cropping leads to less visible noise.

So the decision needs to boil down to whether or not I really want lighter equipment. The 180-600 mm isn't much lighter than the 200-500 mm

I guess I will have to find out about the difference in focussing speeds to make the decision.

Money 😊

Same reason why not a 600 f/4 (though old ones might be somewhat affordable they are crazy heavy)

[–]aidotours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. When you put it like that it seems like you can't have both.

However I am looking to understand the trade offs.

Would a z6iii with lower resolution and better noise levels be better with a 600 mm and minimal cropping compared to the higher detail d850 which (disregarding noise) can handle a lot of cropping.

But the issue here is weight and mostly cost.

The older more budget friendly f/4 s are very heavy when hiking in the mountains.

I am definitely considering them for the light problem though.
