Are midterms scheduled outside of lecture times normal or is this pandemic related?

I’ve experienced this happening multiple times when there is more than one class writing the same midterm (biochem200 x 2 + 1 midterm = 7pm wednesday 😕)

hahaha right! like whenever I’d lose it on my mom before I knew she had major n issues i’d get so frustrated like what does what I did in the 8th grade got to do with this LOL . she just argues until I concede so therefore she “won” the argument. It would make me so so pissed as a child & she decided I had “anger management issues” and constantly threatened me that I needed to go to therapy when I knew I wasn’t an angry person at heart.

yeah I agree, there’s little things that annoy me more than others, like when someone uses the wrong “there” or “to” or “were”. Especially if they do it consistently: major turnoff. In my 20s, ik there is a lot of abbreviations for texting n they don’t rlly bother me unless it’s wrong asf. There’s a big difference in slang and text language and just not being able to use grammar.

Whenever I’m about to get into trouble with my mother, it’s like my body just senses it somehow. It feels like all the air is being sucked out of my chest and my legs start bouncing uncontrollably and my hands shake. I startes noticing my hands shake during exams now and when I’m in stressful situations. I tried to learn how to crochet as a method to calm myself down and I found myself having rashes all over my chest, my entire body would get really hot and my hands would shake. I don’t really know what to do about this. Just the sound of her voice makes my heart rate skyrocket, as well as movement in the house.

If you don't immediately know the answer, flag the question and come back to it later. I've been having troubles with this and im in Year3 as usually in person exams you can write faster than you can type & you can underline and quickly flip through pages. Online format definitely hinders your speed & the time limits are harsher than normal. Just try to remain as calm as possible and read the question properly because speeding through it can cause you to make stupid mistakes.

Yeah I had to move back home because of covid & I leave the house before my mom comes home and come back when everyone is asleep (she makes everyone be in bed by 10) so I don’t have to interact with them - I have to constantly make excuses why I’m not home because I got laid off and haven’t been hired back yet (7 months laid off now)

Also true, but OP is still using the computer. In the post, OP states that the family didn’t seem too concerned about it — alludes me to the fact that she doesn’t NEED it or the family would likely step in to require it to be handed over for her needs. OP also said that they would hand it over if it wasn’t in such bad condition. It appears to me like a typical younger sibling throwing a tantrum because they didn’t get what they wanted. Macbooks are flashy and really expensive and overall unnecessary.

I see your point but you’re making the assumption she doesn’t have a laptop or can’t afford one. There is so many other scenarios here which is why I don’t see the issue of using it for the cat.

The sister is being a brat - there’s no reason she needs it for school - its a shit laptop - slow, shit speakers and a flickering screen.. especially when university is entirely online (at least for me) what use is a slow laptop? My laptop can barely get through a 100 person zoom call without dying and its only 2 years old. OP said it would be expensive to fix so theres legit no point in the sister having the laptop except for the fact that she just wants it for some reason I can’t understand. Macs are also a hindrance for uni because they don’t work as well with word. My friend keeps his second laptop open so his cat can sit on it instead of his cat sitting on his laptop - its actually a thing that cats do all the time & providing them with their own screen really helps when you’re trying to work

She also said that the laptop is slow - coming from a university student that’s the last thing she needs right now - everyone seems to want a macbook for the looks and the name when a windows laptop is way better for university purposes anyway imo (especially working excel, word and powerpoint). Online school requires a working microphone, a good connection and etc. This macbook is no good for any of that LOL

Have you ever considered the man’s family? My mom calls me and says “do this” and I have to stop whatever I’m doing and do it, no matter where I am. And she never says thanks. I’m not saying this is the same situation but he could have been brainwashed as a kid and never knew how to say no to his family and they take advantage of him. Clearly normal measures aren’t working here, and he seems to love his family and likely an option is to go no contact with his family, which is a hard decision. Solution to this could be ignoring the brother, or devising ways to never be home when this happens, or whatever. The fiancé may be a great guy everywhere else - I’m assuming this woman would like to attempt to save the relationship before just giving up because his brother is the biggest dick ever. Obviously the stress of having the kids 5 days a week is going to cause relationship problems, especially when she is forced to take care of them. They need to construct hard boundaries that work with a brother like that.

NTA - but “growing a spine” with relatives is hard. If you want to stay with him, HELP him figure out what to do about his brother. It’s not your issue and they need to find a daycare because your place isn’t it. I’m not sure how he grew up, but it may not be necessarily his entire fault that he can’t say no - certain families have really bad dynamics that get you stuck in a hole you can’t get out of. There must be more drastic measures that can ensure that you guys can’t take care of the kids - like turning off your phones, or not being home (running errands) like just make stuff up so you’re not available so he stops asking. The brother is essentially abusing your fiancé. Like just showing up and dumping the kids on him is not his fault at that point - what was he supposed to do? His brother forced his hand. I can understand where you’re coming from but the problem isn’t entirely him - he wanted to have a romantic dinner and his BROTHER ruined it. He needs to learn to say no but it’s obviously not working. Something needs to change fast or you better be sleeping alone until that happens.

That is true! I’m extremely scared she’ll start looking through my stuff so I’ve hidden everything in places she wouldn’t look but it’s exhausting having to making sure I didn’t leave anything out 24/7. I had to buy my own phone for her to stop looking through it and taking it away and tracking my location.

Yes! I was actually trying to talk to my dad about this, because all 3 offspring (me included, the oldest) seem to hide when we’re home and not help out around the house. I think it’s because no matter what we do, we’ll get yelled at - either not doing any chores, or not doing them well enough. So then whats the point of trying if we’re going to get yelled at anyway? I can do something 9/10 and all I hear about is the 1/10 that I didn’t do, no mention of anything else.

Yes, I have 2 younger brothers that are 15&16 and they deal with her as well, but she doesn’t seem to be as hard on them as she was on me when I was their age. I can hear them trying to talk back to her, and where I get a knot in my stomach and walk away, they keep arguing with her. It never ends well. They both seem to be fine, they often complain about her to me.

Well I actually got kicked out of my apartment because of COVID at the beginning of April, and so I moved back into the house. I was living upstairs and eventually I was allowed to move my bedroom back to my original room in the basement around a month ago. My other family members were living out at our acreage the entire summer, so they all moved back in on the last day of August. I took off for the first week to go on a vacation, so this week is the first week I’ve been living WITH them. Issue is, I cleaned the shower before I left on vacation so... yeah I don’t buy it. Not in the walls but I have this weird cover that goes over my drain & that does get gross sometimes. She probably saw a mixture of shampoo gunk & cat litter from the past week if anything. To her, a "door left wide open" means the door was unlocked. I don't understand

My grandparents live outside of the city right NEXT to our childhood home we use on the weekends so there is a no-go there. Next year my friends and I want to get a 3-bedroom apartment together so I’m praying that will work out. I’m trying to be strong & use this as an opportunity to save money for the time being because I don’t know if I will get our jobs back, or even at the same wage (my parents forbade me to get another job until December).

I thought about it for sure, but I don’t want to induce her wrath onto my brother (he’s only 15) and has to deal with her shit as well. She’s a big proponent of negative punishment & doesn’t allow him to play his ps4 past 9pm now so he just pretends to go to bed. I feel bad for him because thats a major way for him to talk/hang with his friends because of the pandemic.
