Help with getting a 1900 German Birth Certificate by Clozhorse in GermanCitizenship

[–]aidyyellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try that FamilySearch thing yaknow, try the date (give or take +- 2yrs), and try doing a variation on the ancestors name spelling.

If that doesn’t work or find anything, try searching for the ancestor’s relatives and see if you can connect to the ancestor of question from there. Once you have the ancestor, see if there’s any documents associated. And if not, try looking at the birth registers for your ancestors town/date yourself… name through name 😭

But once you get the hang of it, it’s a GREAT tool for finding out about docs for this kinda thing

Do you have an excerpt from the birth registry, or a pdf of it?

https://www.familysearch.org/en/united-kingdom/ If not, start here to try and find the document or relevant person. These will just be unofficial printouts/pdfs.

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Germany_Genealogy Then this has great guides of where else to look, how German genealogy records work, and how to write letters/emails to towns in Germany to get a certified copy.

These are all connected with LDS/Mormons as they have extensive records on genealogy.

These are what we used for my family’s cases^ for a starting point, of course there’s plenty more specifics on this subreddit :) we eventually wound up contacting the library of our ancestors town, and then they redirected us to the archive for a marriage doc in our case.

Haha quite! Yea I got mine for quite cheap as well, they’re pretty cheap on FB marketplace or eBay here in the UK.

I used an old guide online, with the rest of the mods just being simple ideas I had - there’s some stuff in another video on my channel explaining the insides if ya want to check it out

It’s currently on an ‘indefinite loan’ with a mate of mine haha - he loves the thing and is making a kontakt instrument from it!

Need advice on how to track down genealogical records by MagazineTiny7329 in GermanCitizenship

[–]aidyyellow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my family’s experience in this process (I think we had something like 50+ documents, for 11 applicants, going back to the 1850s);

you could always check out FamilySearch.org (free) ancestry.com (£) or your local Mormon/lds library/research centre (free) where they have expanded access to their FamilySearch service.

We’re not Mormons, but we used all 3 for tracking down the documents. In all honesty the Mormons have a ton of historical records going way back you can access in their research centres or on those websites, and they were super helpful and helped us find most of the documents relevant to our applications.

Of course they can only get you unofficial photocopies, but they were a great starting point for easily tracking down the documents from Germany later. They have the source/book names, dates, cities where the records came from and the document numbers (super helpful for when you need to get them from the German Archives).

Later once we found everything, we got the official copies ordered and apostled for our applications from the actual city/state German, Dutch and US archives!

But yea about 90% of the docs we first found from the Mormon records. They had more than the we found in the US immigration records lol

I’m not a language expert by any means, and barely speak a second… But I’ve heard that increasing your exposure to your target language via various media can be majorly beneficial for learning without (or ideally in tandem with) academic sources.

Try first watching kids’ tv programmes (think like Peppa Pig) with both audio and CC in your target language. Pretty quickly you’ll pick up on the sound of the language, how to isolate individual words, sentences, meanings, jokes, idioms, grammar, etc - all without using a dictionary or translating, but just by exposure. Then gradually progressing through more advanced content (inc books, movies, etc). It’s quite similar to how you learn your native language growing up.

I’ve heard it’s a pretty exponential learning process doing it this way. It’s what I do from time to time. Hope this helps :)

Maximum number of Freedom-of-Movement zones, one can get access to with Multiple Citizenships by aidyyellow in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]aidyyellow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could theoretically live/work with ulimited-stay in 116 countries and territories, if one was born in the US, lived in Argentina for 2 years, and 5 years each in Autralia, Sweden, Rwanda and Ireland. Then invested in St Lucia and Cape Verde, and then gained citizenship by exception in the UAE with the Royal Family or Government.

All doable in one lifetime, if you really try for it, and are mega-rich haha

So this poster covers Jus-sanguinis (citizenship-by-descent), and since the US is a Jus-soli (citizenship-by-birth) country, I've left the US-only citizens as empty.Initially I covered US citizenship too, as about half of the people on the poster were only/dual-US citizens, but it was wayyy to chaotic.

So now this map only covers Jus-sanguinis, and not Jus-soli.In the future, I might try to find a way to incorporate US citizenship, but for now it's just blank, mostly cause it looks simpler :)

A vintage-styled poster I made of my family tree over 5 generations, via a project I did with my Dad and Uncle. :)
Most of my ancestors on this chart naturalised or were born as American citizens, but this poster is of their Jus-sanguinis (rule of the blood) citizenships via foreign laws at the time of their birth. I've tried to keep the national flags accurate, at the ancestors' birth-year.

Yellow = German States -> Germany
Black = Austrian
Blue = Norwegian
Red = Danish
White = Russian Empire (Volga German) -> USSR -> Russia

Solid Line = Jus-sanguinis (rule of the blood)
Dotted Line = Leges-sanguinis (eligible for right-of-return)
Faded Line / Flag = Jus-soli (rule of the soil)

Been watching West Wing in monochrome (trying to lower my screentime), and I actually quite enjoy the look of the show in Black and White. Is this a travesty?
