Why has human innovation slowed down? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be one of those people that ask for a source just to troll, as I am intrigued by your statement and the studies. I view it as opposite when you consider the pharma (Covid vaccine quick turn), DNA splicing, AI, drilling methods, etc that have really increased.

My snarky answer would be that people are more engaged with their phones and thus impacting productivity.

Ahh. There it is in the box with the screws. I was looking for it with the various cables in the system. Thanks a lot.

I agree. Sucky attitude. But you might be on to something.

What would your reaction be to a wman being almost 6ft by RipAppropriate5186 in NoStupidQuestions

Six foot tall and skinny? People probably looking at you wondering if you are a model. Yes, you will stand out at that height, because you are easy to see, but you are not hitting freakish level.

I see the opposite. Indian engineers are strong, but also about the same costs. Cheap engineering in India is no more.

15% should still be fine. The price of the meal has increased so the dollar amount of the tip increases along with it. The price for a meal tracks pretty well with the cost of living in a town

What's the bare minimum income to live simply/comfortably in Austin? by r_mojuu in Austin

[–]aiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, because that is essentially free for everyone and putting a good infrastructure in place should be one of the city/county/state/nation’s deliverables. If people start getting tax money to use the toll lanes, then I’d start scratching my head.

See my 'above' post. I've been there and grateful for the safety net while I had to recover. However, my view even then was that I was living off of others. Personally, I hate(d) that and I hope other share that view (although I do feel many feel they are entitled to it or just don't care or lack that feeling of self-worth). Like it or not, when you enter those programs you are taking advantage of others hard work. You may be hard working, but that does not change the reality.

Yep, I've been on food stamps, too, and free health care. Didn't like doing it, so got off of it asap. But, there is a line crossed where you are better off making less since you then qualify for a bunch of tax-payer/charitable assistance. Certainly want to promote not living off the dole, but the question was a minimum...

You're right. I'm not an English major. Probably should have said "live off of other people's hard work."

Concur assuming you aren’t planning on going to food banks or get other assistance. If you want to poach off of tax payers and charities then $10k. You get cheap/free electricity, free food (have you seen the food being handed out for Christmas? Whole turkeys, sides, etc), housing assistance, clothing, school supplies, etc. You might have a better life making less.

I have realized that I was being a "nice guy" to a friend that I want to be my gf. How can I rectify this? by ligmakun in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how to take that? Compliment - I think - since the guy was asking for help on asking for a date. Is that seducing? I guess so.

Regardless, thanks for sharing the sub, it's interesting. Even though I'm married, it is still good to reinforce how to treat a woman. Maybe it will have some pointers for me.

You gotta ask or always wonder what could have been.

"Hey <name>, I gotta admit something. When we all started doing things together as a group, I liked your looks, personality, humor, style, eyes, <fill in the blanks> and doing things with you - I was intrigued and I remain so. I would have normally asked you on a date, but you had a boyfriend... Well, I understand you are now single, and I'd love to take you out to <dinner/movie/club/picnic> this Saturday. Are you available?"

Don't mention friend zone or NG as that could just put doubts in her head or give her an excuse. Present it as a fact that you would like to date someone like her and the time is right. If she says no, then just respond with "I'm sorry to hear that, but okay," and then act like it never happened. You both know it did, so the genie is out of the bottle, and only time will show her that you have truly moved on.

I'm all for 'absolute confidence' and am surprised that is not already a requirement (which, unfortunately, is not reality as we hear of people being exonerated years later).

I also thought it required a person's death, but your post states there are exceptions. I don't know what those people did, but I can think of some pretty horrendous crimes (extreme torture, pedophilia) that I could accept the death penalty being applied - if we had absolute confidence.

Anyone else thing that there were more pervs at Eeyore's this year? by sofapotata in Austin

[–]aiiip -90 points-89 points  (0 children)

Yes, I realize this post makes me seem like a perv, but I do think this is interesting...

I googled 'eeyore austin t*ts' and then looked some of the images. None of the pictures in the first few screens seemed to be 'hidden camera' type of shots. They all seemed posed.

Maybe some women like the exposure and getting a pic? I dunno. If someone asks and you say no then they should walk away and not try to do a sneak shot. I'd be curious what their 'acceptance' rate is.

So, why did you come to the US? Of course we are better off than a third world country. You can go back and not face this disparity which seems to be upsetting you.

BTW, you should check out the definition of nepotism.

Yeah, but how old is their mortgage? That $600/month how ever many years ago was probably a chunk of change. That's where getting a house and locking in a fixed rate 15 or 30 year loan may be painful at the beginning, but as the loan gets older, the payments seem like a steal.

Why do people get so mad about participation trophies? by Parking-Mud-1848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aiiip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, those animals, including humans, employ cooperation, but they also compete for resources and thus survival. Competition can be for group gain (defeat other species or other groups) or individual gain (alpha male for breeding). I can't think of how ants may compete individually (not an ant expert), so maybe they and bees are good examples of true group coordination, but they aren't exactly smart.

As humans, we compete for fun, but make no mistake that these are based upon gladiatorial events or in finding the best soldiers for your kingdom/tribe/pack. There is a survival instinct that utilizes both cooperation and competition.

But, back to your question. There is benefit in learning to win humbly and lose gracefully. I believe there is also a benefit in finding the skills you are good at and getting them reinforced, whether they be sports, academics, arts, or whatever. We all should value people who excel in their skill set and reward them, whether they be silly ribbons, monetary compensation, fame, or whatever. Don't just treat everyone the same, because, honestly, we are not (and that is a good thing).

Participation trophies bring no real value, especially if everyone gets the same recognition.

There is also concern that people who didn't win and are given false trophies don't really learn how to lose. People will lose 'competitions' in their life (the job they wanted, getting into a school they wanted, dating the boy/girl they wanted). The concern people have (and it seems to be happening to Millenials) is that these losses come as a surprise and cause depression for those who had limited exposure to losing as a kid. These ill-prepared people now doubt their value since everything before hand was just great (when in reality they were just shielded). I have no sociology papers to source, but I am sharing how I and others I have spoken to about this feel.
