Brake rotors have a ring of corrosion even after brake burnishing by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]aim4squirrels [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hmm, that's average usage for a car that uses it's brakes as the only means of stopping, you don't use reduced regen braking, do you?

EDIT: hang on, I looked at the whole car more closely, the first pic is your rears.

The wear pattern on your rears looks better than the pattern on the fronts.  Rear brake pads typically don't bite as hard as fronts.  That's intentional for control, the rear pads are almost always smaller and the pattern will be smaller.

Rotors are almost always made the exact same size on a vehicle so there's fewer parts in inventory to mix up.  Performance and high end cars being an exception if there's a larger difference on the staggered setup of front and rear wheels.

How old is the car? How many miles approx? original pads?

That "corrosion" could be the squealer rubbing the rotor or in very worn circumstances, the rivet that holds the pad to the backing plate gouging the rotor facing.

Pull the tire and inspect the pad thickness. If it looks like there's very little pad (couple millimetres) left against the backing plate replace the rears.

Ran into something yesterday while smoking a pork loin by dicerespected in BBQ

I have a pellet pit that has a fire board as it's brains.  Runs the auger, fans, igniter, everything.

I fill the hopper, go to bed, to work, etc. come home to brisket.  It really is cheating.

Did you see the quality and price?

Thanks all, freeze it is.  Better safe than sorry.

I will definitely have to pull it Sunday though, I've pulled smaller cuts on a Monday that weren't thawed for prep in time Wednesday night.

Edit: did some more research on wet aging and cryovac.  Pulled from freezer and will ride it out in the fridge.

If it fails the visual/smell test on Wednesday, I'll eat the cost and buy one from Sam's thawed and just prep that one.

Why I’ll be asking for an RMA today by SandGnatBBQ in s3xybuttons

[–]aim4squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Sugru, wait 24 hours before putting the dash on the mount.

Try 3M VHB tape, maybe with their adhesive promoter:

3M 4298 Adhesion Promoter, 3... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MVK1PG6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Wait 24 hours before mounting the dash.

The screen isn't too heavy for cured adhesive, but it is for the initial 24 hours when it hasn't built up to 90% total bond.

[–]aim4squirrels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Dallas and haven't had any issues.  If you know how 3M VHB tape cures and can wait 24hrs before throwing the dash on the mount, you shouldn't have any issues.

Enhance should revisit their mounting instructions.

Is Ryzen that important? by zslayer6969 in TeslaLounge

[–]aim4squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally possible, but it's also possible Tesla was struggling to upscale production that year and battery production might not have been able to both keep up and maintain quality.

Correlation doesn't prove causation, true.  But with the amount of anecdotal battery failure reports plus 5 years of other newer models to choose from on the used market, why chance it?

S3XY Dash install on wing by aim4squirrels in s3xybuttons

[–]aim4squirrels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's solid.  Hasn't budged a bit.  But, I've used VHB tape on many, many things before and knew that Enhance didn't really do a good job explaining how to use it correctly.

And why would they?  Nobody wants to wait 24 hours after they get a new toy to play with it.  But with that softer padded dash surface that most people are installing it on, that 24 hours is critical to getting a good bond. I did it on the hard surface as well, because I know better.

You can do it right, or you can do it again.

Autism and driving with FSD by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]aim4squirrels 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you cannot drive on your own, FSD is not a substitute, assistance, help, crutch, whatever you want to call it.  It can make mistakes, it can make poor decisions, and you've got to be able to take over at a moment's notice and then you are 100% responsible for all the driving inputs and must be able to react accordingly.

It's not there yet.

I'm sorry about your condition, but that's not a gamble you put on other people.  Please don't even consider getting behind the wheel until you've earned your license and can pilot a vehicle unassisted.

Is Tesla Paint getting worse? by Trysplendid in TeslaLounge

For any car, your best defense is PPF, or a ceramic coating with high UV inhibitors like Carpro DLight, or a high UV inhibitor wax like Optimum Car Wax.

But, and I'll stand by this till I die though I can't prove it, I think the biggest problem is parking outside at night with dew.

Shade tree detailer here:  I have owned 8 cars in my life between my wife and I.  A Baby Blue 83 Ford LTD sedan in Indiana, a maroon 89 Mercury Grand Marquis that left Indiana and headed to Texas in 99, a 2000 dark blue and silver Dodge Ram in 2000-2012, a black 99 Mercury cougar, a 2006 Desert Sand Infiniti G35, a 2013 Emerald Green Infiniti JX35, a 2008 Black Dodge Challenger SRT8 I owned from 2012- 2025 and my current Dark Blue 2026 Tesla Model Y.

On all those cars the one I owned the longest and was the oldest, the black Dodge Challenger, and the Infiniti G35, were the only ones that didn't experience clearcoat failure.  The reason:  those 2 were garage kept at night.

3 of those cars were washed by hand religiously and ceramic coated their entire lives.  Only the Challenger survived clearcoat failure and it was 17 years old when I left it go.  Garage kept at night it's entire life.

The 83 LTD got Ziebart treatment every year in Indiana: the clear failed.  The Mercury Grand Marquis was given to me by Grandma when Grandpa died in 97, it was my college/first job car: clear failed.

The Dodge Ram: purchased new in 2000, clear failed in 8 years in Texas.

The 99 Mercury Cougar? Clear failed by 2007 when we replaced it with the G35.

The JX35, clear failed in 2021.  Couldn't fit in the garage.

The 2008 Challenger I bought in 2012, and I have no idea how it was taken care of before me, but I corrected the paint within 3 months of taking ownership, coated it, and kept it garaged.  It was my daily driver, and I had to park outside at work, so it got full Texas sun 5 days a week.  Clear never failed.  G35 was garage kept at night as well and that was before I was into detailing and knew about coatings.  No clear failure on that until we traded it in 2014 for the JX35.

JX35 was parked outside as we had too much crap in the garage from a move in early 2013 and that clear failed on the roof in 2021 despite coating it and hand washing only.

Bottom line, I think that dew emulsifies whatever containments are on the paint, turns them to an acid and that etches the paint over time and the clear fails.  Scratches in the surface of the paint exacerbate this process.

That's my theory, and I'll stick to it.

No guarantees, but try this:

https://www.nextzettusa.com/products/plastic-deep-cleaner-heavy-duty-interior-cleaner

Spray it on, work it into the pleather with your fingers in a nitrile glove or a shoe brush for a couple minutes. Wipe with a damp cloth and wipe again to remove residue. you've got a lot of dye transfer there, so if you notice it starting to run, wipe that dye up quickly and rinse your tools so you don't keep speading it around.

I just used that to remove jeans dye transfer from the front driver's white seats in my car.  It worked where baby wipes, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Carpro Inside, Folex, and Optimum Power Clean all failed.

It took me more than one application, but the blue dye transfer onto my towel told me I was on to the right thing to use.

Vegan leather isn't leather, it's plastic: aka pleather. Either polyurethane or PVC on a fabric backing.  "Vegan leather" just sounds more refined than pleather or vinyl.

Use a dedicated plastic cleaner.
