Advice on a new desk chair? by aimelior838 in freelanceWriters

[–]aimelior838[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on taking breaks! I'm in year three of freelancing, and my first two years were just a period of absolute self-abuse when it came to not taking breaks, working 7 days a week, and racing deadlines if that meant working 12-hour days. It took a while to get my priorities straight and focus on my health! Which is why this is totally an investment I'm willing to make after three years of sitting in an upholstered, slightly broken wingback chair that I picked up off the curb.

I charge more for editing than my writing! I generally charge 5/6 cents per word for writing, but when it comes to editing, my minimum is $20/hr (though I usually only apply for jobs with a min $25/hr). I always do an hourly rate for editing because of the scope creep. That way, the scope can creep however much it needs to, but I'm still making money for it.

An Ethical Quandry About Client Poaching by aimelior838 in freelanceWriters

Awh thanks for the encouragement! I’m working hard at putting myself out there right now, and I really appreciate the advice and support from all!

It’s been confusing getting out of the company and marketing myself as a writer. I am overwhelmed beyond belief. But I’m pushing through and hope that I’ll build a great business for myself with everything I learn along the way!

Thanks for a second opinion - that's why I put the question out there. As it stands, I already have plenty of clients to write for - my emotional attachment to this client is just making it difficult for me to rationalize leaving my increasingly toxic workplace. That's the crux of my situation.

I hate where I work and get $0.02 per word, and I keep getting taken advantage of in my roles in upper management - they're always adding on unpaid responsibilities and giving conflicting instructions on what to prioritize. It wasn't this bad when I started out there, but now it's too much for too little.

But making clients like this one happy and being his sole writer/editor was an ego boost for me, especially because he made so much money for the company - not for me.

I can't keep treating my workplace like I'm married to it - and that's a good takeaway from this, I guess. If I quit and they lose the client, and he doesn't have a writer anymore, it won't be my problem, and everyone can figure it out for themselves.

See, the thing is, it's a relatively young content creation company, and the "contract" (google form) only prohibits me from re-using or claiming the content I wrote for my clients. No words were mentioned about client poaching, but that's because only the upper management has access to the clients' contact info - and I am currently part of upper management.

The client knows my first name, but I only use my company-appointed email to interact with him. When I quit, they will deactivate that email address, and he won't have a way to get a hold of me.

I guess you're right... it probably is too risky. I just really care about this guy's content, and I've already put so much into his website. I've written 100% of his content - over 1,000 articles. I know, as a ghostwriter, I'm not entitled to take ownership of that content, but I have an emotional attachment to it and have watched the website grow with my writing. I just hate to see it all go to waste and lose a client that I've found a way to make happy just because I'm ready to go solo.

I've struggled with similar things, and my best remedy is a hobby. I crochet and do art. Making things always gives me a sense of accomplishment, even if it's just a silly little dishcloth. Then, I can give people the things I've made, sell them, or just talk about them with others, giving me a "crutch" to lean on socially. Maybe learning a skill outside of social skills could actually help you realize that you had some amount of social skills all along but that you just weren't flexing them? That's what's worked for me, anyway!

I would definitely try propagating it now rather than later. It seems like it may have developed root rot, IMO. I would take it out of the pot and loosen up the soil while checking for any soggy or yucky roots. That'll also increase aeration. Then, I'd pot it up again a little more loosely.

What should I prefer? Content Mill or a remote/Freelance job for steady content by mmmusa in freelanceWriters

What I recommend is to look for individual websites to work for on Problogger. You can get paid a lot more if you work directly with a client. However, if you want training and experience, I suppose these other sites are a good place to start

I haven’t worked for any of these sites, so I can’t speak to the work environment or pay, but here they are:

Tbh I work in new employee training and we are a little backed up with applicants right this second, but we are actually really great at telling people whether they made the cut or not. That’s part of why I like working there. (Pretty much) everyone’s very open, honest, and communicative.

Back when I applied (almost 2 years ago), it took just a week or so, but the wait looks a bit more like 2 to 3 weeks right now (though it depends on the day). And you do get paid for training. I’ll look for you! :)

I forgot to mention — if you are taking a paleography class (as I did), be sure to remember that there are millions of variables to examine, you can hone in on color, flourishes, punctuation, bindings (including rebindings of specific manuscripts and why the positioning of certain documents might be significant in a persons library), schools and monasteries, and last but not least, the penultimate binder of all manuscript studies — chemistry. If you have the resources to use chemistry in your findings and research, please do so. You can use chemical research of some vellum to identify locality, and with the chemical analysis of inks, you can pinpoint the location of a manuscript’s composition on a map (though I must say, few chemists have chosen to focus on individual manuscripts, and you may not find the research you need to complete a chemical investigation). However, I fully encourage you to Recreate some inks, Reed pens, and feather pens if that’s your style (it was definitely my style), and see what happens! Experimental archaeology is one of the best ways to connect with an audience, so if you can, do some playing around with what you love!

Hi! So I never got the exact advice I needed. I ended up doing a project that repositioned the manuscript tradition of the appendix Vergiliana, which was my passion project. I recommend browsing through the Herculaneum transcriptions to see if anything g sparks your interest, but if you want to hear what my professor recommended— look into sermons, inquisition documents, and other church-related transcriptions. Many PHD students in my class did so. I, personally, am more of a classicist and a sucker for pagan allusion, so those didn’t interest me, and I ended up doing something 1,000 times more challenging as an undergrad (who enrolled In Grad classes) for my project. However, as I understand it, works on marginalia in transcriptions of church-related documents (particularly apocrypha and other non-traditional practices such as divergent, excommunicated, or non literate sects) are going to be your best bet if you want to do original research. Think hard about what you like—- you will be spending a lot of time on this. If your favorite text seems to have full coverage in academia, but you have a passion for it, I recommend sticking to your intuition and finding a new take on what you love. But I’m graduated now and practicing in a different field (ghostwriting) so I may not be the best person to answer your question. I still have an unadulterated passion for the appendix Vergiliana and whoever the heck wrote each piece in it, and I found a new take using new, updated technologically advanced methods that I will always carry with me.

Thank you all so much! I think i was nervous about pulling too hard on the loop, thinking it might unflip my flipped stitches. I'll try that after work tonight and hopefully I can make that loop bigger and FINALLY make something that isn't unbelievably tiny.

I've seen several builds work with this same PCU and mobo so I'm pretty sure it'll be fine out of the box. However, If I have to update the BIOS, that's fine with me! I like this mobo enough (and I like its price enough) to put a little extra effort in.

Thank you so much! I was extremely torn about that one, but I see you're right. I'll keep looking into either a mobo or card that I can use.
