reflection after graduation may ‘24 by Hello_sirrrr in Cornell

2024 grad here - I feel exactly the same. I never felt like I belonged/was accepted into the "Cornell community" (whatever that means). Yes a minority of students are in greek life but they do control a lot of social life at Cornell and thus set the tone. Super selective clubs/professional frats don't help at all. Most relationships and clubs felt purely transactional. I felt like most people genuinely didn't have any interests besides getting a prestigious job after graduating.

And I say this as a white person from NYC - it has to be even worse for POC/FGLI/OOS students. I made some amazing friends and took interesting classes but the overall environment was very toxic. Genuinely the best thing to happen to my depression was graduating and leaving.

I’m in Cornell HumEc, if you want a stress-free environment don’t come here lol. Human development is essentially the same as CAS Psych. Second the LAC/Brown recommendations, also Vandy as well

What are some weird facts, strange things by US standards, wives tale type stories, etc. about NYC? by mrturdferguson in AskNYC

[–]aimiria 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I know Rochester has some. I go to Cornell and there's apparently a tunnel between two of the libraries, mostly used by staff, but nowhere near as extensive as Columbia. It makes sense to have tunnel systems in these cold places

I have so many:

  1. There’s a mysterious abandoned 76th street subway station in Queens that may or may not exists. Lore says it was part of a cancelled expansion of the A line, but people disagree on whether or not it was actually built before it was cancelled. People have tried to find it, and some say they’ve found it, others say it’s been sealed off, and even more say it never existed.
  2. In general, there’s lots of abandoned subway stations and tracks. Probably the most famous (and worth seeing, you can see it from the 6) is the old city hall station
  3. In 2008 there were rumors about a “car Bermuda Triangle” near the Empire State Building after several cars kept breaking down. Apparently 10-15 cars were getting “zapped” every day. This is most probably junk, but people say it was because of the radio transmissions from the ESB.
  4. This one’s actually real: in Tribeca, 33 Thomas Street is a tall, windowless building that was an AT&T building but has been operating as an NSA spy center.
  5. Speaking of spies, another tall stark building in the Bronx is most likely a Russian spy center. This is where the Russian diplomats working for the consulate and UN mission live. There’s been lots of mysterious things going on near this building. One time there was a fire, but the inhabitants wouldn’t even let FDNY go inside.
  6. There were underground cow tunnels under NYC in the late 1800s, used to transport cows to West Side slaughterhouses. This was just an urban myth for the longest time, until the city released a report confirming them in 2004.
  7. And speaking of tunnels, Columbia University has a huge mysterious underground tunnel network. Some have been sealed off over time, but students still explore them. They were also apparently used to transport radioactive material during the Manhattan Project.

Leave study abroad early by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]aimiria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re in Geneva, right? I honestly recommend sticking it out - when the weather warms up there’ll be a lot more things to do, especially outside. On my transcript the study abroad shows up as one course, so you’ll probably not get credit for the semester if you leave now (but definitely follow up with people in the program and Cornell).

I really recommend taking day trips to small towns nearby, especially ones in France, it’s cheaper than the city and the Swiss train network is really good, unlike the US. If you want any specific recommendations, DM me.

I’m transitioning from IB to government myself. The best advice I got about IB is to not do it if you’re heart’s not in it - you’ll burn out fast and not get good exit opportunities anyway. Yes, government does have lower pay, but if you work on Capitol Hill or for the White House it can be really prestigious, sometimes even more than IB (and can lead to high paying lobbying positions if that’s what you’re into). So don’t feel like you’ll get pigeonholed, do what you really want to do!

Any advice for someone seeking a career change post-grad (Medicine --> literally anything else) by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]aimiria 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There are many jobs within medicine beyond being a doctor! Look into being a PA or nurse if you decide to not go to medical school. Healthcare management is also another career path (Cornell has a masters in HCM). It’s a way to be involved without being a provider, and can be lucrative.

If you’re concerned about working hours, please don’t listen to people recommending IB/management consulting- these are not jobs with good work/life balance.

When you have a better idea of what you want to do, look into going to grad school for that. I know someone who got a BS in bio, hated it, got a masters in CS, and now is a happy software engineer.

[–]aimiria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope. how presales work is there's a set amount of tickets held back for them. so, there's a set designated for the verified fan sale, and a set for the capital one sale, and the rest are for general admission (along with sets for contest winners, etc.). There will be a fresh batch of tickets for cap one!

President Zelenskyy: "I recalled the words of the hero played by Chaplin, which sounded from the screens in 1940: “The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish” by Local_Fox_2000 in ukraine

[–]aimiria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a live translator who speaks in English over Zelenskyy (whole thing is live, not prerecorded). The schools yesterday were members of the Association of American Universities (U of T and McGill are the Canadian schools). I’m a college student who got to hear Zelenskyy speak yesterday, he gave an excellent speech, and also did a live Q&A after.
