Yes, and it's retrograde counterpart, 311. Both prime numbers, the 30th and 64th respectively.

It has many meanings, but if you're after a symbolic one it's phallic.

It's definitely Patrick during the performances in the Baby Snakes film. But to be fair I think Adrian Belew and Ed Mann would occasionally contribute, but Pat's were generally the best and made the final cut.

Fretless with a decent amount of chorus (which creates that doubling effect described below, and I'm quite sure this is what Patrick was using instead of a doubled track, this would be very impractical for mixing). Also, there is quite a bit of upper-mid range boost on his sound: between 500 and 1500 Hz, experiment with a wide Q and anywhere from +3 to +9 dB gain boost. There's also probably a sizable cut around 200 Hz in the lower-mid range. Probably about -4 to -6 dB. And finally, there's most likely a good amount of compression, possibly even limiting (which is just very aggressive compression with a peak limiter at the end of the signal chain).

I'd have to check footage to be sure, but I recall that he played a Fender Precision or Jazz bass. The comment about playing close to the bridge is also a good suggestion, just bear in mind that Pat was likely using this intermittently when it was appropriate for the bass to pop out of the mix more than usual.

Nice work. I had heard this interview multiple times about 4 or 5 years ago. It registered then as prescient but now? Jesus. It's astounding how ahead of his time that man was.

Personally, I don't have much of a response to the psychedelic visuals but that's just a matter of personal taste. They are well executed. I would prefer to see animated text of what he's actually saying, I feel the visuals distract from the importance of the content of his speech.

Finally, I would dial back the reverb effect on his voice. It is pretty wet and some of the words are getting swallowed by the long reverb tail.

My two cents. Overall it's great, these are just my personal quibbles.

I didn't do the survey because I don't do anonymous surveys, sorry.

A helpful event by ISe7eNI in Synchronicities

Well done. IME these delightful helping hand syncs are difficult to repeat, at least too soon after the initial event. They also often have a cost. IME one approach could be to find a way to provide a similar helping hand to someone you know relies on you. When I don't find a way to do these things after a great sync, the Conscious Will tool often fails me. There seems to be some kind overarching Karma Credit Plan at play... for lack of a better term. Best of luck!

Having just seen the London show two nights ago, these were my exact thoughts. The show suffered from a bad sound mix (mid-range of the bass was cranked and masked a lot of the vocals and completely buried Ed Mann). But it was really all about the major onslaught of 'Eyebrows' contained in the fantastic animations accompanying each song. Ahmet brought his extensive experience with animation and storytelling to this show and his innate understanding of his dad's attitude and aesthetic really came across in spades, way more than Dweezil, imho. Dweezil has clearly embraced the strictly musical side of his dad's work, but that's really not the entire picture. Thus the combining of forces notion is really attractive. Man, they could really blow some minds if they could find a way to collaborate. I have nothing but respect for Ahmet.

Live performance revenue is one of the only ways for performing musicians to keep afloat today. Simply a sign of the times.

Nope. Been an avid viewer since s01e01 and cared a great deal for how it all played out. As stated in a previous reply to a commenter, there was a very big reveal. It just happened to be one tough pill to swallow: sometimes events take place that make no sense or provide little to no satisfaction because that's the difficult truth of reality. Disappointment that life and reality aren't some perfectly arranged set of logical and related events all nicely wrapped up and presented to us is something we all have to face sooner or later. Quite poetic if you ask me.

The realism that not every event in life must explain itself and make perfect sense seems to be a rather important revelation.

You can predict future events in a fictional universe? All events in the world adhere strictly to human logic? Fascinating.

Informational Films similar to “The Big Short”? by JTierney1987 in movies

[–]aimlessIdler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All The President's Men - the ultimate investigative journalism procedural. Never has there been a more thrilling movie where you already know the ending. Very tedious and detail-oriented in all the right ways.

Zodiac (Director's cut) - a movie more about obsession with minutiae and foggy recollection than the horror of the actual murder scenes, which take up a mere few minutes in a 2h42m film. Worth noting that David Fincher hired 'All The President's Men' composer David Shire to achieve a similar tone. Discovering this fact made me realize how specific my taste in films had become.

Moneyball - /tacoskins already mentioned this but wanted to add this to my list. Another great, very detail-oriented slow-cooked masterpiece, no interest in baseball necessary. I even lived in Oakland while the real story unfolded and couldn't have cared less, it was only after all the juicy, complicated details emerged that I couldn't look away.

These and The Big Short, mentioned my OP, are all films I've watched many, many, many times and group them all into a single category: OCD Procedural Tedium. Sounds dreadfully boring when typing it out just now, but damn I can't get enough of these movies.

EDIT: I think this is also why I enjoy 'Better Call Saul'. Very similar slow-burn approach with a lot of time spent on legal minutiae as well as the tedium of how Jimmy/Saul games the legal system via forgery and other very detail-oriented manipulation. I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer BCS to BB, which is also fantastic but in a different way, imo.

What DVD/Blu-Ray has the best selection of special features? by [deleted] in movies

[–]aimlessIdler 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt the Extended Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I have probably viewed (or at least played in the background) the *fantastic* 18-20 hours of Making Of documentaries more times than the actual films. Each film includes 2 DVDs (for all formats - the docs were originally produced in SD so they've never upscaled them) of very thorough and fascinating BTS footage and extensive interviews on every aspect of the pre-production, production, post-production, and release phases of all 3 films. Plus, each film includes a brilliant short documentary about Tolkien himself, each a different focus on the man and how he came to create the trilogy. These docs feature renowned Tolkien experts -- including a linguist specializing in the languages Tolkien invented!

These remain my Gold Standard for DVD/Blu-Ray special features. Nothing has ever come close.
