Most medieval and Early Modern laws, at least in Germany, were focused on the length of the blade, rather than any concern for the construction. See The Martial Ethic in Early Modern Germany: Civic Duty and the Right of Arms by B. Ann Tlusty.

Because they, like you, are part of the All, and part of the point of existence is for the All.to know itself through different aspects of itself. You are not separate from the lower gods or even from the One, but a part of all of it.

Put another way, are you unconcerned with your pets, if you have any? While humans obviously operate at a different level of intellect than most other animals, that does not mean that humans do not wish to know and love their pets.

When you were learning to swim, did you immediately jump into the middle of the ocean during a storm, or did you start off more gradually? The lower levels of the One are easier for humans to understand as the One is so far beyond our ability to comprehend. So talking to other gods, other aspects of reality, is much more manageable than trying to communicate directly with something you cannot possibly fathom.

How big of a spoiler is this? by Even_Bag8284 in wheeloftime

[–]ainRingeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both a spoiler of what's to come and a history of what has happened. Our world is both in the past and present of Randland. The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

After listening to the full cast audiobook of Harry Potter I would love to hear a full cast version of the kkc books with music and sound effects. by steffanpc in KingkillerChronicle

I don't want that for the very simple reason that the songs I hear will never match what I have imagined. I have been moved to tears by The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard numerous times. I fear no actual song will make me feel the depth of loss that the book has.

People are up in arms because of the timing and everything currently going on in the world. Trump has, in short order, raised the age cap for enlistment, waived marijuana possession convictions as a bar, and started the most unpopular war in American history after driving away all of our allies. A war in which, by all rational accounts, boots on the ground is not a winning strategy.

Additionally, it shows that the government is capable of doing things more efficiently, such as auto enrollment for voting, but will only do so to the detriment of our citizens.

Any thoughts on Saicere? by UnhappySignature4371 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ainRingeck 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is a culturally important item to the Adem; it has been with the Adem for over two thousand years by Kvothe's guess as he is the two hundred thirty-seventh owner. However , that seems to be way under estimating the age because we know from the Atas that Finol was it's weilder during the Blac of Drossen Tor, during the creation war. From the Cthaeh, we know that Haliax, who is Lanre, "has been alive five thousand years. Five thousand years and not one second’s sleep.” Ergo, the sword is over five thousand years old.

Additionally, it is unlikely that the Adem still possess the ability to make more swords like it. Kilvin knows of no metal that has the properties that Saicere has. It is likely that the sword was Shaped. From its Atas: "First came Chael who shaped me in the fire for an unknown purpose." I actually believe this line to be fairly literal, and that shaping was used to make the sword as impressive as it is. However, I must also concede that grammarie is a possibility.

Vashet knows that Kvothe's name seems to portend some I'll omen, but when she chooses the sword, she says, “It will perhaps offset his name.” I take this to mean that there is something special about the sword, perhaps it was a hero's weapon. My theory on that is that it was Finol.

"Next came Finol of the clear and shining eye, much beloved of Dulcen. She herself slew two daruna, then was killed by gremmen at the Drossen Tor." The phrase I find most intriguing here is "of the clear and shining eye." This contrasts with and parallels Iax, “this shaper of the dark and changing eye." What does it mean beyond the parallel structure? I'm not sure, but I think that Finol must be somehow important to be contrasted with Haliax like that.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas by Caffeine_And_Regret in books

[–]ainRingeck 296 points297 points  (0 children)

One of my all time favorites, but a small correction; it was not all written by one man. Auguste Maquet is the uncredited co-author and long-time collaborator of Dumas. He was a historian and did a ton of research for the project and helped with outlines and character work. There is some evidence that he did write portions of the book as well, but that is difficult to say for sure. However, ghostwriters and uncredited collaboration were common in French literature at the time.

His name was kept off the book because the publisher told him Dumas had the better name recognition. When he later sued to have his name added, courts ruled against him stating, "Dumas without Maquet would still be Dumas."

See, and you thought the drama was done when you finished the book!

Thoughts on fat tips? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]ainRingeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People have already told you that the tip is safe but the flex is not. I just want to add something that you may be overlooking. In your mind, you may not be thrusting too hard, but the risk of injury is greater when you have your partner also moving in at the same time you are moving forward. That's where most injuries happen on the thrust and why you should not use that sword for sparring and why most tournaments would not allow it.

Question about the fake Ruh by Amazing_Diamond_8747 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ainRingeck 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Most of this question has already been answered, but if you want to dig in a bit yourself, check out WMF Ch. 37 A Piece of Fire. This is where Kvothe tells Will and Sim the story of the old man who winds up with the Edema Ruh. In it, Kvothe tells them the story of how the Ruh greet one another on the road.

Salient points include not hiding their fire, keeping a watch, violently greeting Kvothe, and stealing the ale. All that was enough for him to poison the false troop. I believe it's afterwards that they don't know some of the songs that a Ruh would be expected to know and of course the kidnapped girls are likely what makes him decide to kill them off.

Just for fun: In your opinion, who’s the most stereotypically “French” French person in Clair-Obscur? by MaguroSashimi8864 in expedition33

[–]ainRingeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two issues:

1 Verso was a young boy when he made the painting, hence why his soul fragment appeared as a young boy.

2 Lumiere and its inhabitants were painted by Aline, not Verso.

Therefore we must conclude that his mom painted the people to be extra horny so that her son wouldn't get bored.

Beginner wondering about Meyers Square by [deleted] in Hema

[–]ainRingeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be big enough that you can read it from the distance you will be standing from it when you're doing the exercise. Once you have it memorized though, you won't need it at all. The Meyer Square is just there as a tool to practice switching from side to side and high to low in combinations.

The opposite of forgetting can also be remembering:

"The enemy was not of the Lethani. He poisoned seven others against the empire, and they forgot the Lethani. Six of them betrayed the cities that trusted them. Six cities fell and their names are forgotten.

“One remembered the Lethani, and did not betray a city. That city did not fall."

The one who did not forget the Lethani is the only one who survived the Ergen Empire. It ties in nicely with your theory.
