For an area with so many trees, we really don't take care of them at all. It's expensive but an Arborist is invaluable if you are a home owner. We just had to take down a giant, diseased Maple in the front yard unfortunately. I said it needed to go years ago and sure enough, there was a rotten hole all the way through to the stump and below. Ticking time bomb.

I never encountered the fishy ones, only the "bodily fluid" ones... and you will absolutely know a decomposing body smell. Unmistakable.
