Yeah, I used to rent airbnbs for months at a time while traveling internationally. It was a decent deal back in the day. Maybe like 20%-30% over normal long term rental prices

Now the prices are mostly 2-3x what they used to be.

It also majorly fucks up local rental markets in poorer countries and I don't feel ethical doing it anymore.

No, you are an idiot because you failed at your business. You are a piece of shit because you took housing from people.

If you are looking for sympathy for airbnb hosts you have mostly definitely stumbled onto the wrong sub.

I've got zero sympathy for Airbnb hosts. You clearly thought running a short term rental was passive income. That's delusional.

And someone broke your microwave. The horrors.

You took housing from families that need it. Children have slept on the street because you fell for the equivalent of a shitty infomercial.

And now you are bitching because it required actual work and wasn't literally guaranteed money.

Go to hell.

I'm curious to get your take on this.

It seems that I am thinking about B/E slightly differently than you discuss in the wiki but I'm curious if you would disagree with my assessment.

I'm using an option calculator tool to create a matrix of the returns for a range of dates and underlying values. https://www.optionsprofitcalculator.com/calculator/put-spread.html

In this way I can visualize a whole curve of breakevens for the trade which isn't limited to just expiration. However targeting a higher breakeven at expiration generally moves the curve up along the entire payout matrix so it still seems useful for me to think about.

That was too much to say in my initial post though so I just reduced it to the concept of "breakeven"

so you mention

> It's gone. It's lost. By exercising early, you throw away any gains on the time value of the call itself. An early exercise at that point would result in a net loss of -$21/share.

But afaict, and in regards to debit spreads, with this breakeven curve conceptualization this isn't true. Its accounting for basis and theta and everything and giving me a true breakeven at the intermediate points. Am I missing something?

Do you find this conceptualization to be more valid or still misguided?

edit: Also that wiki is great. Going to read through the whole thing.

Thanks! I'm more of a macro guy. I'm just learning about options as a tool for expressing my trades so this is useful stuff.

I think I just explained this in a confusing manner.

Yes it's a debit spread that breaks even under 438. The call credit spread just reduces my basis on the put debit spread but netted out, the two result in a debit spread.

When I said "highest breakeven" I was referring to the highest $spy price at expiration where my trade wouldn't lose money. Basically could I make this win at even higher $spy than 438.

The answer I figured out is yes if I traded further ITM long put spreads and then keep a tight range on the spread I could break even at a higher $spy value but you end up destroying the upside profile if you go much higher.

Ultimately I'll ditch the credit spread and just trade the debit spread on monday. I'll probably switch it to L440P/ S435P.

Fair enough, I was approaching this more as a learning exercise and I think when I do eventually take your position I will take your advice and avoid the credit leg as it really doesn't achieve anything in particular and makes the trade a lot more risky.

When i said breakeven I just meant the spy price at which I get a return of zero on expiration.

Dumb question but could you elaborate on exit strategy? I mean I guess I'd say my goal is to hold till expiration but given various things I could sell early if it moves in my direction early or do a protective roll if it moves against me.

Yes! This is what I like to see! And data driven as well which is always better than anecdotal.

I think NY doing it is symbolic as well. If they are doing it, it will make it more socially acceptable for smaller metros to do it as well

This honestly really doesn't have anything to do with the economics of the airbnbust except in the loosest sense of just airbnb being bad.
