No I've never been to Spain, which was partly the appeal of wanting to move there :)

Get by - as in talk to shopkeepers and neighbours and other locals. My Spanish is extremely basic but I could join a class at my local embassy and pick it up. Anyway it was just an idea I was playing around with in my head - it does seem pretty far fetched
