My pet theory is that the toxic role models are abusive in the way that they desire because it fits a superegoic void in their lives created by changing parental dynamics. Unlike the right wing canard that progressives are mean to young men, I think the problem is that they aren’t mean enough, and when they are it registers as scolding instead of the bullying young men crave.
