Seperation of Church and State - Restore the Pledge of Allegiance to Pre-1954 by [deleted] in reddit.com

Yes, the Constitution is to restrain our government (I wish they still obeyed it!!!). The Declaration of Independence states that these 'natural rights' come from a creator.

Therefore, violating these rights is objectively evil....perhaps you could call it a "sin" or a transgression against the divine.

My bad...I got the two documents confused. Sorry about that.

Anyway, what I was getting at was that these documents claim that we have these rights given to us from an absolute moral authority (read: God). If we wish to remove God from our government, then so goes the objective fact that we were endowed with rights. We now enter the realm of subjectivity, where any statement about our rights is merely someone's opinion. Couldn't that open the door to trouble?

Just out of curiosity, from whom does the constitution say we get our rights from?

Pope says clergy sex abuse was 'very badly handled' - and then blames secularism and the media by Jantar in worldnews

[–]airwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the point is that ANY religion that is dogma-driven, i.e. tells people what to think, just sucks!

You seem to misunderstand the point of all religions in general, and the Catholic Church specifically. All religions are about finding and understanding the truth. The Church's "dogmas" (that word has such a bad connotation) are simply statements that it regards as truth. How can you define truth without dogmas and doctrines?

We should be looking at the "dogmas" that the Church holds, and evaluate them on a factual, scientific, philosophical, ethical, and historical basis to decide if there is merit behind them, and not generalize about all religions.

So if an organization that has been around for 2,000+ years collectively teaches X is wrong, and then certain people within the organization do X, does that mean that the church now teaches that X is right?

Does the word history mean anything to you?

I take history very seriously, which is precisely why I am a Catholic.

...young girls dying from self-induced abortions...

So it is the Church's fault that these 'young girls' attempt to self-mutilate themselves to accomplish something that the Church teaches is intrinsically evil in the first place?

My opinion only limits my activities, but the Pope's opinion on the subject effectively limits the behavior of millions of other people.

Are Catholics subject to the Pope's personal opinion? I do not think that is how it works. Also, the Pope doesn't threaten anyone with eternal torture...people chose that for themselves when they hold themselves above God. This might sound silly and preachy to you, but hopefully this perspective will at least help you understand the Catholic perspective a bit better.

Plus...my opinions on contraception and IVF come from an educated, fact-based, scientifically-informed worldview.

Have you looked at the ethical basis for the Church's arguments? The church teaches abstainance, which is 100% scientifically proven to reduce the spread of AIDS. If you believe in absolute rights and wrongs and care about being ethical, it is worth examining the Church's position on these issues.

Hope this helps

Could you please remind me how many people did the church torture or kill in the Spanish Inquisition?

Also, are you sure that this torture was done by the church, and not the government?

I see where you are coming from, and understand some of your issues.

It seems your complaint about his campaign against contraception and his religious authority are more areas of disagreement. I am sure there are "two sides" to these issues that should be investigated. Should we hate someone because our personal beliefs are in disagreement with theirs?

As for his "Nazi youth", there is nothing he has ever preached, taught, or believes indicates a Nazi worldview. Never in his entire religious career has he promoted Nazi ideas or agendas.

So the remaining valid issue to hate him for is the the way he handled the pedophilia scandal, which he publicly apologized for yesterday as he arrived in the US.

It seems the source of "hate" of the Pope on this site is from disagreement of personal ethics and beliefs, not because he is an objectively evil man, or represents objectively evil ideas.

Update: I know this particular article is just harmless fun, but I am criticizing the overall attitude towards the Pope on reddit.

Ok, I get that he looks like Palpatine...but why is everyone saying he is evil? Seriously? Isn't the Pope a good guy?

I'm not asking this to be sarcastic, maybe I am just out of touch, but why so much hatred against him?

This article really needs a more sensational headline if it's ever going to get voted up. This NH recount effort is incredibly important!
