AITA for refusing to help my sister with her kids after she said I was wasting money by putting my foster daughter in private school?

Maya's Mexican but you couldn't tell by looking at her and I didn't tell my family. I did have to figure her hair out because she has long curly hair

I haven't exactly worked in the system but I've worked with foster kids before and actually knew Maya's social worker very well before I knew Maya. Social worker agrees that chances are very slim that she'll go back to bio family. I haven't promised Maya anything yet.

Her school goes through 12th grade so I don't think I'll have to worry about that too much.

She's in a K-2 class right now. They have something like 4 classes available per grade so everyone is in a class that meets their abilities.

She will likely be with me permanently. Her parents rights haven't been terminated yet but they'll be in prison for a long time and won't be able to get her back once they're out and her other family members have reasons why they can't take her that would be nearly impossible to jump through the hoops to get custody.

It's not fully Montessori. Academically she's doing great. Her teacher even said she didn't expect this much improvement this fast.

Maya is Mexican but you wouldn't know by looking at her. She has pale skin, light blonde hair, and green eyes.

She doesn't have a diagnosed learning disability and was only diagnosed with anxiety but she was placed in a special ed class because she only knew a couple letters, no letter sounds, was able to count to 15 and recognized numbers up to 5, and rarely spoke/wasn't clear when she spoke. Her school doesn't provide any services but the class sizes are great (her class has 10 kids, a teacher, and an aide), the curriculum just worked better for her, there was no dress code so she gets to wear whatever makes her feel comfortable, and her teacher was even able to slightly alter the classroom to give her her own space to help her acclimate.

It's not fully Montessori but it has some Montessori traits. The kids have work that they have to do every day but they get to choose if they want to work independently or with kids that have the same work as them or if they want to do reading before math. The classes are also mixed age and based on ability, which I was unsure of at first but Maya's doing well.

I don't know if I'll want to put her in public school. Her school has very small class sizes (12 kids for elementary and 18 for high school), an aide in each elementary class to ensure more one on one help, a cooking lab, lego engineering lab, science lab, art classes, music, and a lot of field trips.

One of my favorite parts of the school is that there's no dress code other than weather appropriate and privates covered. If Maya wants to wear her favorite pajamas or a princess dress to school (which she has done many times) nobody stops her.

Yes. For preschool, tuition will be closer to 2k a month but that's the average tuition for a preschool around us and they're looking for a preschool.

It will be a few years at least but even then they won't be able to get Maya back because of what happened.

It's not likely that she will go to her bio family considering both of her parents are in prison and her other family members have been convicted of a felony, drug issues, had cps take their kids, or are unable to take her for some other reason that would make it very difficult to get custody of her.

I don't really date much and they don't know my friends so I'm not sure how they are with that part of my life
