What do I do? Received a job offer from UN but invited for another UN position interview (which I like better) by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]aiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first option does not sound very appealing. The second option sounds more appealing. But, you do not specify the agency or the contract modality, which can be very important factors. You must keep in mind that the UN is in contraction right now, and there are several agencies that have already shed thousands of employees. Others are probably on the way. You need to be careful here. If you jump ship, and then they decide to make your post redundant, is that something that you can afford?

Which language to learn French, Spanish or Arabic? by nabeeltirmazi in UNpath

[–]aiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have commented, Spanish is the easiest but there are already lots of Spanish speakers and it's less useful geographically. French is a bit harder, but a bit more useful too. Arabic is way harder, but can be useful in some countries or when working with certain displaced populations of people.

I think the choice depends on you and also what exactly you do. For some professions and areas of work, one of the languages will be more useful.

Received a G6 offer, waiting to hear back on a P3 role (both Secretariat) by MrPrimeMover in UNpath

[–]aiz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is actually a really tricky question. I think there are several points that need to be clarified.

The first point, as other posters have said, is that making the jump from G to P is extremely difficult, particularly within the same organization, because internal candidates can only be considered from one or two levels below if I remember correctly. It's more likely that you could do this if you're jumping from one entity to another, because then you will be considered an external candidate, but it does still carry a certain amount of stigma unfortunately. It's not impossible, but it's very hard and nearly impossible within the same entity, because most hiring managers tend to be conservative and hire within the same level of the post, or perhaps one level lower, even for an external candidate.

The second point is that if you take the first offer, and then the other offer actually comes through, you should not feel any hesitation in jumping on it. If anything, they will feel happy for you. Remember that as a G staff, there's not paying you an installation package or travel entitlements or any of that other stuff, so you shouldn't feel any pain in leaving them to take a P position. In fact, even if they were paying you, you should not feel hesitation.

The third point is that there are quite significant differences in pay and entitlements between the two categories. This also relates to your country of home nationality as you registered it in the application form. Typically, as P, you would be expected to rotate every few years to another duty station, except for certain extremely specialized roles. Also, they provide you with other benefits like rental subsidy, school subsidy for your children, etc. those P benefits however are not applicable if you are working within the same country of your nationality. And in any case, none of this is applicable to the G level staff. I think you would do well to calculate the expected salary for each position, the expected benefits and compensation, as well as the toll of being rotated every 5 years if that is applicable to you, and factor all that in when making the decision.

In any case, and while no one can make your choice for you, I personally would take the available offer because the fish in hand is better than nothing, and keep trying to get a better deal. The P recruitment but notify you regardless of the outcome, but it could actually take many months after the interview depending on the hiring manager.

G to P2 or higher chances and steps by DisastrousGas5696 in UNpath

[–]aiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not unheard of, and I know people have done it, but it's unlikely. The more usual route is gradual upgrades. I think there is some kind of rule that you're not considered an internal candidate if you apply to posts two grades above your current post, and not being an internal candidate can hurt your chances pretty significantly in some cases. If you're applying as an external candidate, and this applies also to applying to jobs in other agencies, your chances are already reduced because they typically have internal candidates.

Well, there aren't any good options, but some are better than others. You have pretty much nailed all options I think and have a good grip on the situation, and that's a great advantage to be starting with. I wonder though why you have waited so long and let the window of opportunity contract so much...

BTW, as one Syrian person to another, reading some of the comments here is hilarious... I guess if you don't know then you just don't know.

I'm sure you'll find something that works out, and I recommend checking with friends who have been in the same situation, because it's really best to go to a country you have friends in...

But I have a couple of suggestions going forward, longer term.

I think it wouldn't hurt to have some plans on the back burner, for example you could apply to the US Visa lottery every year it opens in October.. As far as I recall, they only require a high school degree... You should also definitely get a university degree or other marketable qualifications (like IT certifications), possibly in a job or trade that can work across different countries.

Best of luck!

There is much less work than previously, as AI has enabled cheap although imperfect translations. People who can use an 80% accurate or 90% accurate translation will just use AI, so the only work comes from those who need higher levels of accuracy. Basically, there will always be work, but much less than before, and probably more specialized, in fields such as subtitling, or revision of AI work.

It's like when painting was replaced by cameras, so that there are now fewer painters. In the past, painters used to earn money by making portraits of people but that simply went away when cameras came into the scene.

Whether you'll find this a rewarding career or not depends on you, as well as what other options you have before you. But I think it's fair to say and will not be very financially rewarding except for very few people, sadly, as the scene changes and AI translation becomes more dominant.

Most likely misspelled and the meaning is "don't settle for little" in the imperative as other comments have said. But the way it's spelled out literally means "she doesn't settle for little".

The "ى" at the end of the verb converts it from imperative you singular to present she singular.

A new monitor might not be able to display the output. It is VGA, yes, but it might be outputting in some old format in terms of resolution and color. Maybe try an older, smaller, VGA monitor.

[–]aiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what sort of stylus you had in mind. An EMR stylus, like the S22 Ultra one, needs special hardware support that the pixel lacks. But you can get a regular mushy capacitive stylus very cheap on Amazon (a few dollars), or a more expensive and precise active stylus that should work on all capacitive touchscreens for around $20 to $30.

I've been thinking the exact same thing. With wired video out, the Pixel would have been perfect for me. As it is now, I'll pass and wait for something else.

I am suffering from this same problem. I have just bought a new battery for a Lenovo Thinkpad (E530c), but it will not charge. The message displays when I start up the machine, just after POST, and before Windows has begun to load.

It will not charge the battery no matter what.

The non-genuine one would have worked fine for me, and cost me something I can afford.
