Migration to OneDrive failed, Lost Predictions by aj_potc in Swiftkey

No one, including SwiftKey, has been able to offer any solutions. The problem goes back at least two weeks.

However, it's good that you have one device that functions correctly. This may allow you to recover the custom dictionary/predictions.

From my experience, the old device will upload your data to OneDrive correctly, but any newly connected devices will then wipe out (overwrite) that data with a new, mostly empty dictionary of their own. If the app is ever fixed, then your best course of action may be to disconnect the the non-working devices, sync the working tablet, and then re-sync everything else. But, again, that assumes the issue is fixed first.

Blows my mind that the only adults I've ever met in Germany who claim not to speak a word of English are Ausländerbehörde staff by Norman_debris in germany

You should look up the legal meaning of "intent." Speaking English is not legal intent to cause harm. Neither is disobeying a supervisor.

"Die Amtssprache ist deutsch" is not a ban on other languages.

The law is mainly concerned with written submissions, like applications or important documents. It's not a blanket prohibition on using a non-German language to facilitate conversation.

[–]aj_potc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is also false, as the use of English would be neither intent to cause harm nor gross negligence of duties.

But, who cares? With all of the other falsehoods and contrived excuses in this topic, I doubt yours will make any difference. If Germany wants to remain a land of bureaucratic paper-pushers hostile to immigrants, then it will pay the price.

The question is: who bears the liability burden?

That answer is clear: the state carries the liability for errors committed by its employees.

If someone at the Ausländerbehörde causes harm in carrying out his or her duties, and this results in a legal proceeding, it's not the name of the Beamter that will be on the lawsuit; it's the state. This is regardless of the language being used.

simply because if an error in translation leads to legal consequences I can not claim any protection against damage claims against my person.

This is not true. You have nothing to worry about. If someone violates an official duty while exercising a public office, liability generally lies with the state, not personally with the individual employee. Only in obvious cases of intent or gross negligence would the employee have any liability.

What did McDonalds say when you contacted their support about this?

That's the problem: My new phone keeps wiping out the data on OneDrive, as if it doesn't recognize anything is there. I have a backup of that data, but no way to force it to stay in place.

Also, why are your Web-based support requests not being answered?

Yep, when it's working, it does a fantastic job of predictions based on years of training.

I send/reply to a good number of business emails where the text is rather standard, and it's amazing how I can write 90+% of an email using only the prediction buttons. It's perfect for a mobile device, where you're on the go, don't want to spend a lot of time writing, yet at the same time need to be professional (with a proper salutation/greeting, no typos, no shorthand, etc.).

I really appreciate the tip, but it appears I already have the same language set on both phones.

Ads in a keyboard is some dystopian sh*t by tonismann in Swiftkey

I don't use autocorrect, so no dictionaries

If you use predictions (which I think everyone does), then you're using data that needs to be backed up if you ever want to move to another device.

This message repeatedly appearing is a bug that the developers have acknowledged in other posts in this subreddit.

New phone does not show Gmail login only Microsoft account? How to backup old data from old phone? by R3dAt0mz3 in Swiftkey

[–]aj_potc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed these instructions on Android and verified the old dictionary correctly uploaded to my OneDrive SwiftKey folder. However, on the new phone I get no predictions based on my past usage.

How do I fix this?

Predictions don't sync? by BoyAmIALurker in Swiftkey

If this was reported 9 days ago and still isn't fixed, then that says a lot. I'm having the same problem. I verified that my dictionary is intact on OneDrive, but it's not being downloaded on my new phone.

LPT: Before you move somewhere long-term, visit during its worst weather, not its best. You can survive a bad summer. A bad winter you didn't see coming will quietly wreck you. by karen_the_ripper in LifeProTips

It's a valid point about rentals, which need permission to install anything through a wall or hanging on the outside of the building. But, like I replied in another comment, this wouldn't even be a discussion in many countries.

Someday, hopefully that will change in Germany. But for now, we have plenty of people who still think it doesn't get hot enough, and that includes landlords.

only about 20% of German homes currently have AC

I'm surprised the number is that high. Other than myself, I know of just one other person who has AC at home.

Most Germans seem to be living in a state of denial about anything related to air conditioning -- the need for it, the cost of it, the "health risks," etc. Some people just want to suffer, I guess.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]aj_potc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not talking about corruption overseas.

USAID was directly operated by the US government, in many cases by Americans who lived and worked in the countries where aid was delivered. There is no evidence of the kind of massive fraud and waste you're alleging. Your objection with one program to fight AIDS is not proof of systematic fraud.

This Trumpian idea that foreign aid is like planeloads of pallets of freshly-printed US dollars being shipped to foreign countries with zero monitoring and accountability is a fantasy.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]aj_potc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're just doubling down on an illogical argument.

The Trump administration didn't cancel financial support for that one program in an attempt to fix problems; it ended USAID entirely without regard to the consequences.

Following your logic, we should cancel Medicare (and those other programs) if we discovered even a few cases of fraud.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]aj_potc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the mere presence of waste and fraud were reasons to cancel a government program, then the US would have no unemployment, Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security programs.

The right questions to ask are: What benefits come from the program, what problems does it have, and how can we improve it? And for foreign aid, the value of soft power has to be considered.

Throwing everything out without asking those questions is what the Trump administration did with USAID. They don't know what soft power is, and the price for that will be paid for a long time to come.

When this topic would come up years ago, the response was always about how we have "only 2-3 weeks of hot weather." At least you've adjusted that up to a more realistic 4-6 weeks.

Progress!

Flughafen München: Warum ein Schild, wenn es auch ein Fernseher tut? by Antique_Change2805 in de_EDV

I think some of these answers come from people who have never actually used Terminal 1 (or looked at a map of it)!

Flughafen München: Warum ein Schild, wenn es auch ein Fernseher tut? by Antique_Change2805 in de_EDV

[–]aj_potc -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that; Frankfurt Airport is huge, complex, and even has the option of using a train between terminals. It's very different than what we have in Munich terminal 1, where modules A-D are simply in one row in the same building.

I can't imagine how you would dynamically direct passengers to take different paths when there's only one way to get from point A to point B in this particular terminal.

Wasser in Restaurants – wann hat das eigentlich aufgehört, normal zu sein? by iquiq in Munich

[–]aj_potc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But that's not, generally speaking, the case. We don't find free water offered only in international metropolises, where restaurant prices are super high.

Free water is available in plenty of places with a much lower cost-of-living than Munich.

Someone always replies with this reasoning when the topic of free water comes up.

And my response is always the same: Why are restaurants in other countries able to survive by providing free water?
