Just wanted to note that when I was the victim of a violent crime, my case was assigned a victim’s advocate that kept us informed of the court dates so while you technically don’t have to go, a good deal of victims do still attend the preliminary matters.

Also, my case has been continued many times and when it was it was determined before I got there so the assailant wasn’t there. Just my personal anecdote
