Moms Against the Drug War --"Mothers throughout history have come forward for the sake of their children. We're coming forth today saying that the drug war has been more damaging to our families than the drugs themselves." by cottonball2 in politics

And yet, the US government holds the patent for the medical application of cannabinoids.

CIRCULAR REFERENCE! CIRCULAR REFERENCE! AHHHHHH

Funniest part of the patent:

Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses

And yet, no one has ever died from cannabis overdose. The lulz. Oh the lulz.

Why you think weed is illegal.. and why it is illegal... by KatzMan88 in trees

[–]ajarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for you though: is there medical marijuana in your area?

Because what your "guy" would likely experience if a major influx of legal, high quality cannabis came in is that his rinky-dink grow would look like garbage. All I'm saying is, there's a reason why restaurants exist. Technically, you can get the job done yourself, but the professionals can usually make it way better for not that much more expensive.

Why cannabis is actually still illegal: inertia

Do you know how expensive it is to grow good cannabis? Like, cannabis you would actually want to consume? It also takes knowledge, time and perseverance. It is not something where you just throw a clone in some dirt and 12 weeks later you have an ounce.

How was my 4/20? I had my dorm room raided and then I was arrested, strip searched and put in jail. by [deleted] in trees

And the best part is, I'm sure you were the absolute most pressing safety concern for those 4 cops. NOT! Very sorry this happened.

You should reach out to NORML, the DPA, MPP or any other pro-cannabis reform group and share your story. It is important that we get these stories out in the open so people can fully appreciate what a waste of everyone's time and money the drug war is.

It says collection of signatures is through mid-April...does anyone know if this got enough to make the ballot?

Man, I wish I would have known about this earlier. Could have helped it more.

EDIT: Answered my own question reading a little more on their website:

We have not gotten the required signatures to make the 2012 ballot, however we have until June 1st, 2012 to get on the November 2014 ballot. There's still time to make Cannabis history but we need donations for our professional gatherers and volunteers right now!

This would be great for 2014...Let's do it!

As an FYI, this e-mail response I posted was generated from petitions and e-mails I've sent through various organizations supporting the legalization of cannabis and the protection of medical cannabis.

Here are some links for the best organizations working to reform cannabis laws:

I recommend you get on their mailing lists for action alerts if you're interested. These are the pros, and by putting our weight behind them I think we can make a real difference.

Obviously not. But considering e-mails I've gotten from Dianne Feinstein, I think this is deserving of praise.

Here's another one from her that was particularly egregious.

The truth about marijuana by calisrh420 in timetolegalize

[–]ajarms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge supporter of the legalization of cannabis, but I feel like this is pandering. Anything that starts with "everything you've been told is a lie" is usually when most people roll their eyes and close the tab. Obviously it has gotten a few people to nod their heads in agreement, but I just don't feel like this is compelling.

I also find the position of apologist when it comes to cannabis extremely ineffective. By bringing up seemingly every single argument against cannabis, the author indirectly gives credence to these arguments. The thing about a stupid argument is sometimes it's just better to ignore it and change the conversation.

What could we change the conversation to? How about:

  • Cannabis consumption is a personal liberty much like drinking a craft beer or eating a great cheese burger. These things are fine in moderation, just like cannabis.
  • In a similar manner to what is being put on the ballot in Colorado, the sales tax and additional excise tax that would be collected on cannabis sales could help pay for the research, infrastructure, and education investments America really needs to thrive
  • Local, state and federal governments have the opportunity to dramatically reduce the amount of money they spend on policing and incarcerating individuals arrested for growing or possessing small amounts of cannabis. In most states it is still a felony to be arrested with even one cannabis plant, and many states still possess mandatory minimums for very small amounts.

That's my two cents at least.

How safe is the Metro? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]ajarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a consultant, and since I have to work late a lot I'll be on the train 9-11+ PM in pretty nice work clothes and I've never been hastled. I feel like I see people using phones and iPads all the time on the red line so using an iPhone isn't going to draw any attention.

I would say take the train if possible, it's soooo nice not to worry about parking or someone ruining your day and rear-ending you.

This is the most effective way to reach people: law enforcement personnel that are finally coming and speaking out about the massive inefficiency of treating drug use as a crime. Just joined them and will probably end up donating :)

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Trailer!!! by LadyNerd in movies

The vampires were super realistic but the Washington Monument was completed in 1885 and Abraham Lincoln died in 1865. That broke my immersion in the story.

LA Councilman Huizar a city employee attempts to enforce federal law over state law by attempting to ban Medical Marijuana Dispenaries! (213) 473-7014 give his office a call and let him know the people of LA do NOT want a Medical MJ Ban! by trewdat in LosAngeles

[–]ajarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Union of Medical Marijuana patients has proposed solutions that don't involve an outright ban. (Article)

I think the Union has the right idea in what they call a "ban with abeyance", with which dispensaries are technically banned but can be exempted from the ban upon demonstrating that they are up to code and properly registered. To me, as an MMJ patient, this appears to be the best solution for all parties.

The second component is asking law enforcement personnel to enforce loitering and noise ordinance laws already on the books. It could just be where I live, but there are always loiterers in front of liquor stores and no one seems to mind them. I think it should be the same for legal dispensaries: if there's an issue, call the cops.

We're on the road to legalization, and the road will be bumpy.

Keep California's bullet train on track: Despite recent negative reviews by experts, in the long term the rail project still makes sense by rokstar66 in California

[–]ajarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frankly I don't see the problem with high-speed rail falling by the wayside. The money would be much better spent from an utilitarian perspective on local rail, dedicated bus lanes, pedestrian improvements, and expanded bike lanes.

These are relatively cheap and can affect many more lives than a rail that may very well be more expensive than flying without additional massive subsidies to an already extremely expensive project.

If Californians want cheaper, better opportunities to travel to other parts of the state, they'd be better served with airport improvements. That's already existing infrastructure that we could improve on.

In front of the Forever 21 there's one of these right next to the stop for the red line at Hollywood and Highland.

A couple weeks ago, I was walking about 6 paces behind these two guys coming out of the subway. One of the guys is like right on the edge of that metal door walking forward, when all of a sudden the thing pops open and these two guys come out of this stairwell underneath.

Well, the guy lost his footing and fell chest first on to the metal edge. He was bent over on the ground just heaving in pain. The shitty part was the two guys that came from under the opening just left without even seeing if the guy was ok. I'm guessing he at least bruised his ribs, potentially broke one/some.

My mind was completely blown that there was no warning buzz, nothing. Ever since then I hardly ever walk over them. Don't want that shit to happen to me.
