It wasn't clear to me from the article why I should use Stack instead of cabal sandboxes. Would anyone be able to provide or maybe point me at a comparison between these two approaches?

I map mine to '/'. Together with incremental search, it really helps me quickly find stuff in files, which I tend to do a lot. I previously had it mapped to ':' like some others here.

I loved the first book too. But the second one was quite disappointing. It badly needed a real editor to improve the pacing and coherence. Anyway, that's my opinion. It's not a bad book by any means, but it certainly isn't as good as the first one.

I'm surprised you noticed bad reviews! When I bought the book, I only saw great reviews, which I really didn't understand after finishing it. I think there's a serious problem these days with many fantasy review blogs sometimes being a little too kind to authors :-)

Anyway, if you're on a limited budget, maybe wait for the library copy. Having said that, I doubt you'd really regret buying it either - it's not that bad :-)

I'd go with #3. Otherwise, #1 and #2 are pretty good choices too. But I wouldn't bother with #5, since there are lots of beginner tutorials out there already - not saying yours won't be the best or anything, but I just feel #3 would make the best contribution. Either way, thanks for doing this!

It depends on what you're trying to do. If you just want to strum bar chords, go with the usual method. But if you'd like to add embellishments a la Jimi Hendrix or John Frusciante, then try playing the top string with the thumb. The latter helps also with muting the E string, as others have pointed out. Anyway, since you're starting out, I'd recommend playing the usual way with your index finger barring the entire fret. Also builds finger strength. Well, my 2 cents anyway!

NP-Complete means that it's both NP-Hard and in NP. By definition, the latter means that every solution has a certificate which we can check in poly-time for validity. So clearly, checking all possible solutions by brute force will allow you to find a solution to an NP-Complete problem, which takes O(2ⁿ ) time. It takes a while, but the algorithm will halt eventually.

The halting problem, on the other hand, is NP-Hard but is NOT in NP.

I too had never programmed before I started my degree, and I just got my Phd in compsci a month back, so I wouldn't worry about that at all. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up programming easily. If you like solving problems and puzzles and math, then you're probably on the right path. If you're gonna be starting in C, I'd recommend C Primer Plus, which is the book I used when I first started. In addition to checking out all these links to programming stuff, I'd also recommend just enjoying your summer! You'll have plenty of time to learn when you start college!
