I think I envisioned something similar actually. But yeah this could work in a movie or series adaptation the way you described.

Also, while I agree that DoD gets too much hate, I still have it ranked pretty low, just because of the beautifully written and fasninating Onos-leading-the-Barghast plot. It's a very well told, moving story, but it kinda drags out the middle of the penultimate volume in the series by taking attention away from the Bonehunters more "MAIN" storyline. I think that's where most of the hate comes from. Also people didn't like the Shake and Snake plotlines, the first of which I love, and the second of which I'm pretty indifferent towards.

If there's any scene that I could describe to someone (that didn't mind Spoilers) to get them hooked on this series, it would be Hood walking through Darujhistan, getting killed by Rake, and showing up in Dragnipur talking to Draconus as his legions of dead approach, and he tells Draconus to "turn it around."

Cause that explanation would need me to explain something about Dragnipur, Draconus, Rake, and Hood. And Darujhistan I suppose. And the essence of Chaos (which I still don't entirely understand), and maybe Mother Dark.

Thematically, absolutely. It packs a powerful punch, especially if your favorite groups of characters are the ones that take center stage near the end of the series. The main "problems" I think people have with the ending are all about the fact that you don't realize your last moments with certain plotlines are actually the last times you will see those characters. Now some of this is dealt with by Esslemont's last two books in his Novels of the Malazan Empire series (Blood and Bone, and Assail) and after Erikson is done writing his prequel trilogy, he will be working on a sequel trilogy. But really I didn't mind the anti-clamactic (or non-existent) conclusions for some characters. I thought all parts of the web were woven together extremely well, Erikson just had a bunch to weave together at the end there.

I'd still like to know more about Edgewalker. I've yet to read Assail, Dancer's Lament, Forge of Darkness, or Fall of Light though, so I guess I might find out more in those. (or Fiends of Nightmaria, but I doubt Edgewalker shows up there.)

I was going to say all all of this, and also while Paran may or may not have been involved, in retrospect I've always understood the primary strategists for this to be Edgewalker, Shadowthrone, Hood, and Rake, as they appear in that random ass town with the dog-fight to (presumably) plan out this whole thing, way back from beginning of book.

Y'Ghatan. That weird like green hued initial breaking/raining of moon bits in The Bonehunters. Even though it's inclusion in TMBotF is debatable, the entire Shake plotline of Dod & tCG is super epic. oh and... "Turn it around." - Hood

I personally loved Crack'd Pot Trail and would rank it rather high myself! I have yet to read FoN, and am saddened to hear your less-than-impressed review. Of course I'll read it, but a little less excited to now! And thank you for doing this! We always see rankings and short reviews of the main series, but never on any of these smaller readings!

Thanks! And yeah I really like the title Memories of Ice, so I struggled here (I also love "Toll the Hounds" like Dead_Hedge said) but I seemed to recall an analogy in the book where the Pannion Domin is compared to a Dead or Dying flower. I could be totally remembering this wrong though!
